cpu utilization kinda reversed

Post by Zero11s »

Description of problem or question:
Hello I recently upgraded from a Xeon 1230v2 to a Ryzen 2700x and now x265 medium is only 2 times faster (only 50% cpu usage)

x264 suerfast has 90% cpu usage and placebo only 60%, what is going on?

Steps to reproduce the problem (If Applicable):
no idea

HandBrake version (e.g., 1.0.0):
1.2.2

Operating system and version (e.g., Ubuntu 16.04 LTS, macOS 10.13 High Sierra, Windows 10 Creators Update):
Windows 10 pro

Probably bottlenecking on filters, try disabling decomb and interlace detection.

An Activity Log is required for support and will help us see what's going on.

I did that and nothing changed. It even got a little bit worse I think.

A lot of it's down to low resolution content now. That simply doesn't scale anywhere near as well as HD or 4K

That said, there it can't get worse not running decomb unless your running something else on the system that's a high load. It should be in the region of 10~20%

okay I just tried a 1080p video with x264 placebo and it is at 90% cpu usage but that doesn't explain why x264 superfast was scaling so well with SD content - 3 fps is not a speed I wanna encode with (1080p x264 placebo)

You are comparing apples to oranges.

Resolution affects how the work can be split up. The speed slider can also affect scaling when it turns more features on to try improve quality, however it's far less dramatic than comparing SD vs HD

What your seeing is normal.

Also, don't use placebo. It's nearly always pointless doing so. Medium is a pretty good place to be.

just tested x265 superfast (80% cpu usage): the slower the speed slider is, the worse the multi-threading gets

and using constant quality, the higher the quality the longer it takes to encode

More quality -> higher bitrate -> more time spent in entropy coding, that's perfectly normal. And yes, some of the slower presets use compression techniques that don't scale very well, which can explain why they don't necessarily use as much of your CPU as the faster presets.

I found the culprit to be x265. the program "hybrid" has the option to use SVT-HEVC and my CPU is utilized 100%.

downside, it's really getting hot in here
