Full DVD not being run

Post by gucu »

Description of problem or question:
I have been running DVDs without any problems and then I started running into issues where the video wouldn't be fully completed. I have tried deleting and reinstalling.
Now, Handbrake doesn't see the device automatically and I need to tell it where to look. It has crashed several times and is taking a long time to load the dvd.

Steps to reproduce the problem (If Applicable):
I run on the preset - Official - General - Fast 1080p 30

HandBrake version (e.g., 1.0.0):
1.2.1

Operating system and version (e.g., Ubuntu 16.04 LTS, macOS 10.13 High Sierra, Windows 10 Creators Update):
Ubuntu 19.04

A little over 10 years ago, official support for ripping DVDs in handbrake was withdrawn. While you can still use third-party libraries to make it work, the results are spotty. You even get a warning about it:
libdvdread: Encrypted DVD support unavailable.
The handbrake team has no control over the ripping. The 3PL's and their connection to handbrake is easily broken, and they do not always remove all parts of copy protection.

A common problem is disk errors. When the 3PL has an error reading a disk, handbrake considers that to be "end of file", and stops the encode. Actual ripping software, like MakeMKV and similar products, give you better diagnostics about the rip.

Thanks for the reply. It is frustrating that it worked for a while and then stopped. It works on my laptop fine. Do I just have to live with it and only rip those that it works on please? Is there anything I can do please? Thanks

MakeMKV runs on multiple platforms (Linux, Windows, MacOS) and can rip a much wider variety of disks than handbrake ever could. The resulting MKV files work in handbrake quite well, and the ripping speed is not tied to the encoding speed.

Using the combined approach, I can rip a set of disks quickly, then queue up handbrake to process them. Earlier this month, I ripped the TV series House MD (39 Bluray disks) with 2 BD drives, total ripping time about 8 hours, spread over 4 days. I started handbrake encoding them after I finished the first disk, and it took 10 days to encode them all... time I'd have had to wait if I was doing "encode while ripping".

I'm not sure I fully understand. I have loaded MakeMKV and can see I can rip with it. Why do I need to now encode with handbrake please?
Thanks for all the help.

MakeMKV rips to MKV files. The big button that looks like a (sometimes spinning) disk opens the disk, and allows you to select which titles to rip to MKV files, with lots of options as to what to name them.

Handbrake can use those as input.

MakeMKV rips the untouched, pristine Mpeg-2 from your DVD to MKV file, bypassing copy protection for single personal use.

Handbrake converts the MKV to smaller portable mp4 files.
This is not what you wanted to do?
Will you state your need, because I'm not sure what it is.
