iTunes converting my m4V to MPEG?

Post by rinibean »

Description of problem or question:
Hello all, this is my first time using Handbrake. I am taking a DVD I own of drum lessons and trying to get it moved to an iPad. I have successfully moved it to my computer. I have a m4v file on my computer hard drive that runs properly when I click it. I have tried following online instructions to move it to my iPad. First, I tried to import it into iTunes. I go to the "Movies" section, click "Add to Library" and then click the file on my hard drive. When iTunes imports it though, it seems to be converting each chapter into a MPEG. I can listen to each chapter, but there is no video content.

Is there something I'm doing wrong in the conversion to m4v? Or is this completely an iTunes issue? Even if it is iTunes, is there someone in this community that has dealt with this before? Thank you in advance for any help you can offer.

Steps to reproduce the problem (If Applicable):
I've tried it three times and it's doing the same thing

HandBrake version (e.g., 1.0.0):
1.2.2

Operating system and version (e.g., Ubuntu 16.04 LTS, macOS 10.13 High Sierra, Windows 10 Creators Update):

MacOS 10.11.6

I did the conversion a couple days ago so there's really no log to report:

I think if you'll look  , you will find it's still there. No one could possibly respond without it, It's almost certain your problem lies downstream of Handbrake, but we'd like to confirm that for you.

There are several "Apple" presets in handbrake which are generally compatible with different Apple products. Almost all Apple devices can do h.264 MP4 files made with the Apple presets, and newer ones can do h.265 video, as long as you get them to the device.

ITunes is a separate issue, frankly. Video files that play on the iPhone or iPad from the web may or may not import to iTunes. I've had videos that were put on the phone by iTunes, then backed up by iTunes from the phone, which were then "unable to sync" without iTunes doing the encoding. Worse, the file encoded by iTunes then couldn't be synchronized to the phone, because it was a "bad format".

I finally gave up on iTunes for anything video-related. I just copy the videos to the phone, and play them.

When you read the How-to at the top of every page in bold underlined text on a pink background, it will explain where to find the relevant encode log from a few days ago.

Ok, yes, sorry. I did read that but still wasn't looking in the right place. I found it.

Woodstock wrote: Mon Aug 12, 2019 3:25 pm There are several "Apple" presets in handbrake which are generally compatible with different Apple products.

Ok, excuse my ignorance but I'd love to avoid iTunes. How can I copy the m4v from my hard drive to my iPad without using iTunes? I don't really use the cloud though. I ran out of space long ago and just use external drives to back up.

Your file encoding looks fine.
I'm sure you know that MP4, M4V, files are MPEG.
iTunes does not produce MPEG-2, so there is another reason you are not seeing video.
Sorry I can't help you past that; iTunes is a classic "black box" to the rest of the world.

My way of bypassing iTunes was two fold. First solution was simply to put my video files on a web server I could access from my wifi. I could download and save just about anything I wanted.

Later, I found tools to let me access my network attached storage (NAS) server using SMB networking, and copying files back and forth. I've also used VLC talking to the NAS using DNLA protocol.

Finally, I got over the idea that playing video on the iPhone was fun. :)

No, I don't know this. This is all new to me. When I look at the files in iTunes, it shows them as "kind MPEG Audio File" and "format MPEG-1, Layer 3"

I'm guessing that doesn't help clear anything up though. Thanks for your help.

Ok, this is over my head! I think the easiest route to avoid iTunes might be a third party app for file transfers. Something like that has to exist. I think that's my next step.

Google came up with a "top 15 replacements for iTunes" from last week. It included solutions for Mac, Windows, and Linux, some free, most weren't.

I know the problem is appearing when you add/import to iTunes, before it's even had chance to sync to your iPad, however, I can't remember how iTunes deals with this situation, I mean, can't remember if it will try and re-encode or not accept if it doesn't match the criteria for your current device. So with that it mind it may be worth having a little try at this:

First thing, you didn't mention which iPad you have.

You chose: Preset: Apple 1080p60 Surround (giving you H.264 High @ L4.2)
Recommended devices: iPad 5th Gen, iPad mini 2, iPad Air 1st Gen, iPad Pro 1st Gen, Apple TV 4th Gen

As a test for your source I'd try:

Code: Select all

Preset: Apple 720p30 Surround
+ encoder: H.264 (libx264)
+ profile: high
+ level: 3.1
Devices:
iPhone 4, iPod Touch 4th Gen, iPad 1st Gen, iPad 2nd Gen, Apple TV 2nd Gen
You don't need to do the whole DVD, just select the first chapter. Try it and see if it imports in iTunes.

Hi all,

I have sort of figured this out. Though I'm not exactly sure how, I did finally get this into the Apple TV app on my iPad (6th generation), but iTunes removed my chapter indicators (which existed on my hard drive m4v copy). This removes the functionality for me, as the DVD has 80 lessons on it and would be terribly cumbersome to navigate to the start of lessons without the chapter indicators.

So what I eventually did was move the m4v directly from my hard drive to my iPad through an app called VLC. I was able to move it over a Wifi connection through the app and all my original chapter breaks were included.

I've now done this with three different DVD's and it has worked easily each time. Thank you all for your help in sorting it out.

MP4 files do not really have a chapter track. Most people get chapters by making a special subtitle track, which contains the chapter markers. VLC is one of the many programs that understands this extension... which Apple decided not to support.

This whole thread makes no sense. There is no way iTunes is converting mp4 files to mp3 or similar.

Woodstock, the way of putting chapters in a separate track is the the way Apple introduced in the '90. iTunes supports chapters just fine. The TV app on iPad shows the chapters only for movies, but not for home video or tv shows.

@Ritsuka,
OP is confused that iTunes is calling .m4a as "MPEG Audio Files." He thinks it means something else.
That's all it is, and he is targeting that as his problem which is obviously not the case. It is just a beginner misattribution.

In any event, the problem lies downstream of Handbrake, perhaps PEBCAC, and OP would do well to let this line of questioning go, as should the rest of us, methinks.
