Wanting to 'future proof' HB files in terms of audio quality/options.

Post by NotHimAgain »

Description of problem or question:

Re-directed from the end of my thread here: viewtopic.php?f=6&p=184362#p184362.
I've ripped numerous blu-ray discs using MakeMKV. When doing this i never know which audio & subtitle options to select (in MakeMKV) so i basically just select everything that says English. The downside to this is that sometimes i wind up with audio on the video file that is basically just like the director talking about the movie.

I want to convert a number of my rips as i've barely any space on my 6TB HDD. I don't necessarily want to convert the files down to a specific size, i just want to get most of them down from approx. 30GB each, just to free up space on the drive. I want to do this without any visible loss in video & audio quality.

I'm not 100% confident in my video settings but i'm fairly confident i can select something that's suitable for my aim. I'm not so confident on the audio settings though.
I currently play these files via Plex on my TV, therefore the audio comes out of my TV speakers (which aren't the best). I'm considering buying a soundbar although this isn't a certainty but who knows, in the future i may have one. In the future-future i may end up moving house and have a 5.1 or 7.1 setup. I doubt it but who knows - i'd rather the video files be ready for that event than for me to end up in that situation & be like damn i wish i'd done XYZ with these video files. In short i only want to convert/compress/encode (insert correct terminology here pls?) ONCE.

The problem is there's numerous audio files and i don't know what to select. There's also numerous options.

Which codec? AAC, AC3 (seem to be default), then there's this thing called Passthru?
Which bitrate. There's so many numbers to choose from. Again, i want to future proof the converted file and i only want to convert ONCE.
Which mixdown to use? The default appears to be Dolby Pro Logic II but there's other options. In this one video file, the bottom option is 5.1 channels.

Steps to reproduce the problem (If Applicable):

NOTE: If you click the link to the thread i mentioned at the beginning of this post you'll see that (at the time of making this post) i asked whether i need to complete a 4 hour video conversion in order to get an accurate log that was asked for or whether i can just set the conversion up, create a log & then post that log here.
As yet that question hasn't been answered so i took the gamble that i don't need to spend 4 hours and instead can just set up the conversion with the settings, get the log made & then paste that log here.

Hopefully the gamble paid off. Apologies if it didn't.

Also one i forgot to ask...

When converting a file it changes the thumbnail on my PC. The left image is from the direct rip from MakeMKV, the right thumbnail is after Handbrake has been used.

How do i get it so that the right thumbnail matches the left?

Left thumbnail is without cropping, so you would first have to turn off auto-crop and set the crop values to zeros.

Thanks. I think i'll leave that then as it's not vital.

I did read while waiting on a reply to this that by cropping and taking out those black bars, you can create playback issues on devices. That's a bit of a concern.

Anyway - any idea on the other points such as the audio, codecs, mixdowns etc etc?

The most future proof audio option is to passthrough all the source tracks if you don't know/can't be bothered to listen to what each is. Kick the can down the road. With passthrough the bitrate/mixdown are irrelevant since they're not applied.

Only the most restrictive of playback environments will balk at the cropped dimensions.

What's the difference between passthrough and non?

I'm aware that we can get in to the territory of having 'better' audio/image quality but not that you can honestly tell it's better. What i mean by that is i was in a store where they had these 4K TVs. Now i'm sure that what they have playing on these are 4K demo's optimised to make the 4K look as good as it possibly can, which is fair enough, but that's not my point. I then walk along the store and see an 8K TV which is no doubt set up to make that look as good as it can as well. Obviously it cost more.

Now perhaps you can tell the difference and perhaps the man down the road can tell the difference but i honestly couldn't tell you the difference at all. You could've put the 8k banner on the 4k TV and vice-versa and i wouldn't have known any different. So while 8k may be better, based on what i saw, i couldn't honestly see it.

Likewise with the audio. I don't want a noticeable loss in quality but i do want to be able to make use of the hardware that i either have (4K TV incidentally) or that i may have in the future (soundbar for example instead of standard TV speakers).

Passthrough passes through the source audio track to the output without any changes. The alternative would be to reencode the audio in another format.

So instead of AAC (avcodec) and AC3 (as the two default options that are auto-loaded under the Audio tab) with Dolby Pro Logic II mixdown, you're saying i should switch these out to AAC passthru and AC3 passthru instead (with [unknown - same or maybe not] mixdown)?

If you want to only passthrough those audio formats, then yes; if another format is encountered it will use the fallback encoder you specify.

If you want to passthrough all audio formats, then choose auto passthrough.

And if your audio selection rules don't include a fallback, the track will be ignored.
