AAC quality option?

AAC quality option?

I have a genera question re aac and the quality option. Highest value is 10. Can this value be compared with VBR 0, VBR 1 a.s.o with mp3? What is recommended for 5.1 and excellent sound? The only thing I can imagine at the moment, that higher is better.
