Incomplete Rip

Post by Brew Swayne »

Hey everyone, total freaking newb here. Hoping someone is able to assist me with something.

Description of problem or question:
I'm trying to rip a TV show box set, so each disc has multiple episodes. I've ripped each episode on the first 3 discs with no problem, except for 1 specific episode. Handbrake completes the rip, but produces a file that is only 39 minutes long, instead of 59 min. Of the 8 episodes I've ripped so far, this is the only one that's giving me any problems. I think I've provided all relevant info, but if I missed something, lmk.

"Full Disclosure* I am the owner of the physical discs and am only using the rips for personal use.

Steps to reproduce the problem (If Applicable):

I've tried several times with the same results.

HandBrake version (e.g., 1.0.0):

1.2.2

Operating system and version (e.g., Ubuntu 16.04 LTS, macOS 10.13 High Sierra, Windows 10 Creators Update):

macOS High Sierra 10.13.6

Have you tried ripping the disks with actual ripping software?

Handbrake does not "do" encrypted sources on its own, so you must be relying on a third-party add-on library to do it. Those libraries are NOT SUPPORTED here, because they are maintained by others, do not always work, and rarely provide good feedback as to WHY they don't work.

Nope...I thought Handbrake was "actual" ripping software. What other software would you suggest I try?

I assume you're referring to the libdvdcss add on that I needed to install via the Terminal on my Mac?

Also, is it odd that it is only this one specific episode that is giving me trouble? I've ripped 7 other episodes so far with no problem, including another episode from the same disc as the episode I'm having trouble with. Doesn't make sense that only 1 episode would have an added level of security.

MakeMKV is intended for ripping disks and quite good at it.

No, it's not at all odd to have some disks/titles/whatever work and some not. You can use a screwdriver as a hammer sometimes too.

Use of libdvdcss has been unsupported for more than a decade now.

When the add-ons hit a read error, handbrake only knows that the data stopped. Stopped=end, so it finishes the encode at that point.

There's really no rhyme or reason to when a disk fails to read. Most likely issue is a dirty surface. Using ripping software, like MakeMKV, you find the dirt faster, because it will rip at the speed of your optical disk, rather than the speed of the encode.

"Dirty" can be invisible to the naked eye - a LOT of disks come with a chemical film on them that scatters the laser light, but wipes right off with a soft, damp cloth. I've tried taking pictures to show the film on a disk, but you have to hold the disk "just right" to see it, and then only if you've already cleaned part of the disk.

Thanks for the info. I'll give MakeMKV a try.

One last question though...if Handbrake isn't an actual ripper, what exactly is it for then? File conversion?

It's a video transcoder. The intention is to convert from less-efficient formats to more efficient formats.

If you rip a DVD with MakeMKV, the file size will be somewhere around 4-8GB for a movie (MKV does a direct copy). Run it through handbrake, and it can be significantly smaller. Animated features can lose 80-90% of their bulk. High-motion, high-detail video, less than that.

But DVD is not particularly efficient, compared to h.264, so even 50% reduction in size is likely with conversion.

Got it. I've noticed that HB does that, but didn't realize that was it's primary purpose. It's the top result when I googled "dvd ripping software mac" so I just assumed that's what it was intended for. lol. Anyway, I got some good info in here though...thanks for taking the time to respond. :)
