Problems with Wayland

Post by DrJohnWalker »

Description of problem or question:
1. Building from source causes gcc to segfault part way through build.
2. Attempting to use the handbrake-cli package from the ppa:stebbins/handbrake-releases results in ghb crashing after about 1 minute.
If I reboot with "WaylandEnable=false" in /etc/gdm3/custom.conf, then both problems go away.

Steps to reproduce the problem (If Applicable):

Fresh install of Ubuntu 18.10, install HandBrake either from source or from the recommended repository, and problems note above - either gcc or ghb crashes.

HandBrake version (e.g., 1.0.0):

1.1.2

Operating system and version (e.g., Ubuntu 16.04 LTS, macOS 10.13 High Sierra, Windows 10 Creators Update):

Ubuntu 18.10 Intel i5-3570K

HandBrake Activity Log ***required*** (see How-to get an activity log)

I will post activity logs for each case later today, once the long encode that finally works has finished.

Here's the build log when I tried to compile the 1.1.2 source under Wayland.

Turns out that Wayland was a symptom, the real problem was that my elderly PC needed to have XMP enabled in the UEFI. This may be relevant to others who report random segfault problems - video encoding loads a processor and memory up far more than most applications, so Handbrake might be the only place where you experience a problem.

Thanks for following up with that information. Sorry I didn't respond before, but I missed the earlier posts.
