Converted H264 file 3 times bigger than MakeMKV Lossless MKV source?

Post by nicolaidenmark »

Description of problem or question:

Hi all, I copied a blu-ray losslessly with MakeMKV. The file is VC-1 and I need to convert it to H64 in order for it to work with Plex.
I want to preserve the lossless quality so I sat enconder time and quality to lossless as well as video (constant quality: 0 (placebo).

But, the suource file MKV is 19.X GB and the converted Handbrake vers. is 64.xx GB!

How do I keep the h264 lossless without the increase in file size?

HandBrake version (e.g., 1.0.0):

1.2.2

Operating system and version (e.g., Ubuntu 16.04 LTS, macOS 10.13 High Sierra, Windows 10 Creators Update):

Windows 10 Pro, OEM with latest updates as per this date.

Pick a reasonable RF, like 20; 0 is not reasonable.

There's a big difference between "you can't see the difference" and "mathematically lossless".

Post by JohnAStebbins »

The codec used to encode BDs is *lossy*. When you transcode, it decodes that lossy encoding to raw images that are the full size (in bytes) of the original lossless video. *That* is what is passed to the encoder in HandBrake. If you then tell the encoder to encode lossless, it will be attempting to preserve perfectly the raw images it's getting, even though they originated from a lossy source (the BD). Preserving something perfectly takes a lot more bits than allowing some amount of lossiness. That is why your lossless encode is larger than the original BDs lossy encode.

Another example;

The Clone Wars;

Looks good to me and about same size as original lossless MKV. Where's the difference?

You should be using an RF of at least 16 or higher.

What would "Inperceptazble quality loss be"? 25?

And setting the encoding options (Not the RF value) to max is right?

I should mention the rips will be upsdcaled from 1080P to 4K on my 4K TV.

You mean lower? Lower numbers = better quality for the H264 codec....

The lower you go the better the quality BUT the bigger the file will be.

So your recommended highest quality is 16 and no lower numbers/ higher quality?

Pretty much, also don’t use placebo just use very slow.

OK Thanks,

I thought this new computer was fast but 16 hours for placebo encoding and video quality for an animation movive of 1:40h. Damn!
Encoding is... slow...

That’s one of the reasons for not using placebo.

Placebo isn't really worthwhile, thus the name.

For HD content, RF 16 to 26 are reasonable bounds.

Upscaling to 4K is pointless.

I'm not talking about letting Handbrake upscale to 4K. I just wanted to point out that, as I have a 4K TV, every source is automatically upscaled to 4K by the TV itself.

I see my convert of slow encode and 16 turned out a 7 GB file. Trying as better setting now. Trying to match the size of the converted file with the size of the original MKV (19.xx GB).

Matching the size of the original is literally pointless if you're using different encoding settings and have different constraints.

I have the hardware acceleration working nicely with my Nvidia 1060 adapter, in H.265.

The first few attempts produced output that was ridiculously large. But then I tried checking "Avg Bitrate", and I don't enter one. Nice file size reduction!

Another good trick I figured out is that you see what the source framerate is (below the blue-shaded bar) and set the Framerate dropdown to as close as you can find to it. I also check "Constant Framerate". I think changing the framerate causes flicker in the resulting output. Of course, if prior conversion(s) already introduced that flicker, there's not much you can do about it.
