Converting Motion JPEG into MP4 issues

Post by price412 »

Description of problem or question: Handbrake is only allowing me to convert my file to 1440x1080 (4:3) instead of 1920x1080 (16:9). When I view the file on a Windows computer it's in the 16:9 format but to edit in Adobe I have to convert it to MP4 (Adobe stopped supporting the Motion JPEG AVI file type). Handbrake says the source is 1920x1080 29.97fps but won't allow it to be converted to that.

These videos are recorded from our Blackmagic Design ATEM TV Studio HD to our PC via the Blackmagic Design Decklink and using Blackmagic's Media Express software. This was part of a webcast so videos recording immediately before and after this segment are converting to 1920x1080 with no issues. This one specific file is not allowing it.

Steps to reproduce the problem (If Applicable): NA

HandBrake version (e.g., 1.0.0): 1.2.2

Operating system and version (e.g., Ubuntu 16.04 LTS, macOS 10.13 High Sierra, Windows 10 Creators Update): macOS 10.14.3 Mojave

Re: Converting Motion JPEG into MP4 issues

HandBrake is autocropping 240 pixels from the left and right side. Your source has black bars on both sides. If you don't want to crop them, you'll have to disable cropping on the dimensions pane.

Code: Select all

[13:08:46] scan: 10 previews, 1920x1080, 29.970 fps, autocrop = 0/0/240/240, aspect 16:9, PAR 1:1

Yep! That was it. Such a simple fix haha. I even set up a preset and all the other videos I've converted didn't have that! Thank you for your help!

I now see what Handbrake was doing. I think it was recognizing a frame with black bars on the side which was when a powerpoint slide was on the screen but when we switch back to the camera feed it's, of course, the 1920x1080 dimensions. So it was autocropping to get rid of the black bars. I didn't think about this until you said "Your source has black bars on both sides."

I'm fairly new to handbrake and this definitely helped!

HandBrake looks at 10 frames distributed evenly through the video and looks for and measures black bars on each of those 10 frames. It then chooses the median value it measured from those 10 frames for autocrop. So for it to have chosen to crop anything, at least 5 of the 10 previews must have had a black border. You can look at the preview frames in the GUI to verify. If this is not the case, I would be very interested in getting a sample that I can reproduce the problem with myself.

You can increase the number of samples in the app preferences, which may improve the false detection rate.

Thank you all. I can confirm it was the powerpoint slides the vendor was using. We had a three camera set up plus the powerpoint for a lawn & garden webcast. They referenced pictures on the slides so we'd switch to the slides as the feed then back to the cameras. I looked at the preview frames for one video that auto-cropped and it had multiple frames of powerpoint slides.

Glad I learned something today!
