Resize Videos to 1280x480

Post by DeeJay »

Description of problem or question:
Hi, need to convert a lot of videos from 640x480 up to FullHD to a resolution of 1280x480.
4:3 should be just a resize of the middle. Recoded Video should be without black empty
spaces on top or the sides. Just a full Video of 1280x480 pixels.

Is there a chance to get a setup help? :?

HandBrake version (e.g., 1.0.0):
1.2.2

Operating system and version (e.g., Ubuntu 16.04 LTS, macOS 10.13 High Sierra, Windows 10 Creators Update):
Mac OS Sierra

Thanks a lot

1280x480 is not "FullHD", so I'm a bit confused. Can you give more details about your use case so that we can understand what it is you are attempting. What aspect ratio is the source? What aspect ratio do you want the output to be. If the source and destination are not the same aspect and you don't want black borders, you either must crop some of the source, or stretch the image (which will make it look wrong). Why do you want to scale up in the first place? Do you have a player that is incapable of upscaling or does so poorly?

Hi John, Thanks for your help. I need it for the iDrive Display of my BMW. The Resolution is 1280x480! I have succesfully reencoded some 720p Videos. Handbrake set to this resolution i need and anamorph to "own"! The video is automaticly crop on top an botom to 480 pixels and it looks great. Can I reencode 480p Videos to my needed resolution, or just crop bigger ones with Handbreak? Thanks a lot and have a great sunday!

Do you happen to know the pixel aspect of the BMW display? 720p video is 1280x720 with a 1:1 pixel aspect.

I'm assuming in a lot of what follows that you really want *no black bars* in the re-encoded file. This will result in some very undesirable results for 4:3 original source content, but I want to answer your original question as best I can.

A wide screen format movie (display aspect of 2.4:1) is going to have black bars top and bottom when encoded to 720p. The area with actual content of a wide screen format movie when encoded to 720p will be 1280x534, with black bars top and bottom to fill the remaining height. So assuming your display also has a 1:1 pixel aspect, cropping a wide screen 720p movie to 1280x480 doesn't lose all that much real content (27 pixels top and bottom or 8%) and will look pretty good on the BMW display with just cropping.

But other source formats will lose more. For example a 16:9 format 720p movie will have to lose 120 pixels top and bottom to fit (33%). To avoid losing so much content you could shrink it further and add black bars on the side. For a 4:3 original format source, you would have to crop 120 pixels top and bottom off the sources 480 pixel height to fill the screen with no black bars and no stretching of the video (50%). That's half the picture you would be losing if all you did was crop.

The best way to encode a source that is 640x480 will depend on the characteristics of the source. We really need to see a scan log of the source to make best recommendations. If the source has no black bars and is 1:1 pixel aspect (i.e. 4:3 display aspect), you'll have to upscale and then either stretch the image a lot horizontally (not recommended) or crop a lot of the image top and bottom (also not recommended), or some compromise combination. On the other hand, if the source is a wide format movie that has been shrunk to 640x480 (i.e there are black bars in the source or it has anamorphic pixel aspect), it'll look OK with just cropping top and bottom. But any other type of content is going to have important parts cropped away if you do that.

If it were me, I would experiment with some compromises. For example stretch width stretch, crop a little top and bottom and add a small black border left and right with the pad filter.

Pretty sure BMWs have square pixels, displays are just very wide nowadays. My father's can't yet play videos though, IIRC.

I have reencoded a few (about 30 Videos) up to now. 8) The best way is a FullHD or 720p, that is set to 1280*480. The Videos look good in the Car. Do you recommend a tool to normalize the volume on the vids? :D

I haven't had much luck getting video, in general, to look good on the BMW screen. I have tried many different settings too.
