[SOLVED]VOBSUB subtitles not scaling after crop on Linux, do on Windows

Post by camperdarB »

Description of problem or question:
Trying to convert DVDs that are letterboxxed. Any type of cropping, auto or manually entered, causes the VOBSUB subtitle tracks to become too large and render mostly or entirely off the bottom of the new video dimensions. On Windows with the same settings the VOBSUB tracks are scaled to the new dimensions, remaining visible.

Steps to reproduce the problem (If Applicable):
Select one or more VOBSUB subtitle tracks in video project with cropping.
Video tracks are cropped, VOBSUB subtitle tracks are not cropped or scaled.

HandBrake version (e.g., 1.0.0):
Linux:
1.2.1 (2019021900) from official PPA.
Also tried: 1.1.0 from Ubuntu universe.
Also tried: 1.2.2 from download page flatpak
Also tried: Nightly flatpak

Windows (works):
1.1.2 (2018090500) - 64bit

Operating system and version (e.g., Ubuntu 16.04 LTS, macOS 10.13 High Sierra, Windows 10 Creators Update):
Linux Mint 19.1

HandBrake Activity Log ***required*** (see How-to get an activity log)

https://pastebin.com/6BRa8tDX
The pastebin includes both Linux logs for the PPA version (1.2.1) and the Windows log.

Other things I tried:
Updating libffmpeg from Mint's stock 3.4.4 to 4.1.1

Any insight into how to get the Unix version to scale subtitle tracks like the Windows version would be appreciated.

What if you post logs from the current supported verison, 1.2.2, on both platforms?

Also what are you using for playback on each platform, or are you transferring the files to the same platform?

Handbrake does not scale the subtitles unless you're burning them in; they're passed through, and the player is supposed to scale as needed.

Some subtitles are placed by the disk authors in the letterbox area; cropping the LB off will be problematic for these files, whether you scale or not.

My apologies, not a Handbrake issue.
Associations in Linux had switched from VLC to Xplayer.
Playing the video in VLC showed subtitles correctly.
