washed out colour after UHD to 1080p conversions

Post by ridonkulous »

Description of problem or question:
Description of problem or question:
Very pleased with the current version of Handbrake BUT when it comes to processing UHD files down to 1080p using the useful "Production proxy 1080p" preset, (the only one that for me seems able to produce a workable mkv which I can then convert to an .iso for playback on my Dune HD video player), whilst the colour seems fine on the Mac when played back using VLC, the colour is really washed out when the .iso file is played back on the UHD Samsung TV compared with the original 4K file which looks great. All 1080p based conversions play perfectly well on this TV with full colour but I am completely baffled as to why this problem occurs with the UHD conversion; it should look really great.

Steps to reproduce the problem (If Applicable):
I have done some searching on forums on line and there's quite a bit of documentation about this problem but mainly involving playback on computers via VLC, not specifically my issue. There is some documentation about different colour specs for UHD and 1080p but nothing really useful. There's also some chatter about changing the colour settings prior to processing via Handbrake but when I click on the Advanced tag all the option are greyed out and there's nothing on line to suggest what I should do. Handbrake has no filter settings set for this preset and I do not do so either (although I note in the log it says "decomb" and "deinterlace"? as if the program is doing this automatically...)

HandBrake version (e.g., 1.0.0):
1.1.2

Operating system and version (e.g., Ubuntu 16.04 LTS, macOS 10.13 High Sierra, Windows 10 Creators Update):

MacOS 10.13.6 High Sierra

If you play back a uhd and an HD file on a uhd set, they will look different.

Uhd has 16 times as many colors as HD, silly.

Also important to note that HandBrake does not support HDR data at this time.

Yes I think I probably guessed that one already. It does not explain how my 1080p based files play perfectly well with full color on the same set.

Also important to note that HandBrake does not support HDR data at this time.

Then please explain why the latest version of Handbrake has the ability to not only load up UHD files but also a useful option to downgrade them to 1080p? Not trying to appear smart here but it seems if the option is there it baffles me why it doesn't work.

I wouldn't worry about that.

It's not fully implemented.

(sigh) so I guess I live with it. Thanks for the feedback everyone.
Any ideas why introduce this option if the intent to have it work wasn't there to begin with, or when they intend to make it fully functional?

It's a volunteer project, the partial implementation came free from upstream libraries, and as soon as you submit all the necessary code.

OK.
So to all you tech enthusiasts out there who have half a clue as to how to make this fully functional I encourage you to get on board and make this happen because this is a very useful function for the software.
Oh and could I vote for encouraging the powers that be to reinstate the file size setting that featured in former incarnations?

You're simultaneously complaining about the inclusion of a half-baked feature, and the exclusion of another previously half-baked feature, while contributing nothing toward either.

Really takes the entitlement to the next level.

ok, nice. I didn't realise it was a crime to raise an issue I didn't fully understand, nor suggest possible improvements with all the best intentions, knowing I personally don't have the knowledge nor capacity to help with. Please accept my apologies. :(

Not everyone appreciates suggestions lacking implementation ability. Don't sweat it. Suffice to say, it's on the development team's list. ;)

To clarify about partial implementation: HDR signaling is sort of alongside the video information. HandBrake understands the video information, but does not yet understand the additional signaling used to help interpret the video in new ways. So it's not so much that we've implemented something partially, as much as this new(ish) feature rests atop an existing implementation, and we don't yet do anything with it.

In our defense, HDR media has been uncommon until right about now, and it's still relatively uncommon. FFmpeg now has HDR to SDR tone mapping so we'll probably employ that transparently for starters. As for a UI to select whether to pass through HDR data or convert to SDR and the algorithm(s) to use, that's more likely 6 months to a year out for us.

Is there a way to get ffmpeg to do the tone mapping using an additional command line in Handbrake? If so, please could someone share an example so an ffmpeg non-expert like me could implement it?

PS. Is it possible to get nvidia cards to do the tone mapping but not the encoding?

HandBrake doesn't use the FFmpeg command line program. So the only way is to modify HandBrake and add the tone mapping filter.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but UHD is not necessarily HDR. In fact, I believe HDR is still relatively uncommon in UHD releases?

So HandBrake has UHD support thanks to some helpful contributions. We don't yet have HDR support, probably because it's a more difficult feature to implement. I haven't looked into the technical details of this myself yet. So yes, HDR is a partially implemented feature, but UHD is a nice thing to have even without HDR.

From what I know of the basics of HDR however, it's not always as simple as a 'tone mapping'. There are various kinds of HDR. Some are dynamic. I.e. there is metadata in the stream that changes the required mapping dynamically. I don't know what type(s) of HDR BD supports. But it would not surprise me if there were several.

As explained to me, HDR10 is "one metadata color map to rule the whole video", Dolby Vision is "per-frame metadata color map", and HDR10+ is "something that is kind of like DV without having to license DV".

Can a user add a tone mapping filter or does it need Handbrake to support with a release?

Is there an encoder with a GUI you would recommend for the job?
