Green line on bottom of encode

Post by mtmaloney »

So I just uninstalled HB 0.10 last night and installed 1.0, and ran a Fast 1080p30 encode of Finding Dory. Encode went fine, didn't have any issues. I played it back in VLC this morning, looks and sounds fine except for what appears to be a one pixel wide line along the bottom of the frame. (Sample frame here: http://imgur.com/a/S5CvX)

I'm wondering if this is just a situation where I need to crop the picture by one pixel on the bottom when encoding in order to solve this issue, or if there's something with the encode itself that created the green line. I do not believe this green line appears on the source video.

Activity log is pasted below. Running Windows 7 Pro 64-bit (Not sure why it says NT below).

Can you make sure that VLC is up to date, and maybe try another player as well? VLC had a problem like this not so longa ago. Want to rule that out before we go hunting for this.

I see you had a decomb filter running on this encode. Presumably Bob, as I can see some mentions of Yadif threads starting up. (Correct me if I'm wrong.)

If you're using the Decomb Bob option, this is an artifact that I've seen a lot on recorded television broadcasts processed with this option. Television station equipment often introduces one or two black rows of pixels on the top or bottom of the image, which Yadif (Bob) can't always detect properly as not being part of the main image. It will then 'blend' the two, causing artifacts like what you're looking at.
So I presume this is an artifact of the Bob filter.

Indeed: if you *have* to use Bob because the source is interlaced, cropping the video by one or two pixels will do the trick.
But if the video isn't interlaced in the first place, there's no good reason to be using it and you should turn it off. That will result in shorter encoding time, possibly slightly sharper image and it might fix your problem.

Thanks. VLC is up-to-date. But I did check and didn't see the problem in Windows Media Player, and didn't notice it while watching it on my Apple TV. So I'll just chalk it up to a VLC issue for now.

Good to know. This was just a blu-ray encode. I just used the default profile settings, didn't turn any additional filters, but I'll keep that in mind with future projects.

With BD sources, it is rare to need decomb or deinterlace. Exceptions exist, but most BD sources are not interlaced to begin with. So you can disable those filters, and get some additional conversion speed.

Seems that with the latest HB (1.2.2) the green bottom line has appeared again.

Please find the encode log of such.

Repeatable: yes.

Do you still get the green line if you disable hardware decoding in preferences?

With most BluRay Movie source, that is correct. Disregarding Ultra BD, which is a newer spec, camera source at full 1920x1080 is accepted as 50i or 60i only, as it was conformed to the prevailing tape formats, AVCHD and HDV.

1920x1080 25p/50p and 30p/60p source works for BluRay if flagged as 50i / 60i.

If the mastering was done properly, it should just be a flag and the content is actually progressive (no filtering needed). There are some discs where it's actually interlaced, unfortunately.

Agreed. I have come across both scenarios.

"Same as Source / Constant" is a more important feature than recognized, because of its ability to "peek under the covers" and give us back pristine source, in many cases.

Yes, just tested with the same .MKV whilst had disabled "Enable QuickSync Decoding" (toggle off).

When playing the HB created MKV in Kodi > there is still the green line visible.

Strange is, when playing the same MKV on Windows 10 in VLC, that green line ain't visible. I haven't changed a thing anywhere (except updated HB).

Could it have something to do with TV refresh rate on my Kodi (currently set for 60.00)?

I am all ????
