Tips for Converting Color Video to Black & White

Post by KenithO »

Hi,

Would like to use HandBrake to convert a color video to black and white.

Googled and found "Summary of Filters" https://handbrake.fr/docs/en/latest/tec ... mmary.html

One Problem lists Coming Soon! for Detelecine, Deinterlace, Decomb, Denoise, Deblock, Grayscale, and Rotation.

Went to YouTube and found "AfterDawn Handbrake Guide Part 7 - Deinterlacing & other filters" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AfmVZcpp0mw
Also noticed that it was Published on Nov 21, 2010.

Retried search for this year but got no filter tutorials.

Question: Is the afterdawncom filter tutorial (Nov 21, 2010) still relevant or is there one more up-to-date?

Also would appreciate any tips for using these filters!

Thanks

Most videos on youtube cover obsolete versions of handbrake. Anything that mentions the "advanced" tab are pretty much irrelevant now, since that tab no longer exists. For the most part, using the built-in presets is better than what you'll find on youtube, except in very specialized cases... and those are often wrong.

The descriptions of what happens in that video seem to be still relevant for the filters that were in the 0.9.x series, but there have been a number of filters added since then.

Hi Woodstock,

Thanks for your comments!

"The descriptions of what happens in that video seem to be still relevant for the filters that were in the 0.9.x series, but there have been a number of filters added since then"

For current HB Version: 1.2.0, do you know if any of the new filters are relevant to converting a color video to black & white?

Also do you know of either a text or video guide that covers all the HB filters?

The "Grayscale" checkbox is still there in 1.2.0, so that would be the one to use to remove the color.

And Rollin has pointed you at the documentation, so you should be good to go.

Hi rollin_eng and Woodstock,

If you check https://handbrake.fr/docs/en/latest/tec ... mmary.html it is the same website where I mentioned in my original post
"Googled and found "Summary of Filters" https://handbrake.fr/docs/en/latest/tec ... mmary.html One Problem lists Coming Soon! for Detelecine, Deinterlace, Decomb, Denoise, Deblock, Grayscale, and Rotation."

Guess only the website author can say when "Coming Soon!" will be.

Rechecked YouTube for new converting color video to black and white tutorials, still nothing.

Also Googled using "handbrake" converting color video to black and white, nothing

Try Avidemux instead. Two methods: GreyScale filter or MPlayer eq2 filter and drop the saturation.

Hi andrewk89,

Thanks for the Avidemux tip! Which of the two methods to you prefer?
