Only seeing a single English subtitle track while MKV has 4 English tracks

Post by tucobenedito1 »

Only seeing one English subtitle track while the MKV file has 4 English subtitle channels (verified). In older handbrake version 1.0.7 I saw all 4 subtitle tracks.

Load the MKV file. Subtitle track selection behavior is "all matching selected languages, English is chosen language

You are correct. There are actually 5 English subtitle tracks.

I installed older Handbrake versions and found that 1.1.0 displays all 5 subtitle tracks, but 1.1.1 only displays a single one. Hope that helps.

Hmm ... I thought I posted a response, but it seems to have been dropped somehow. Trying again...

Anyway, I briefly looked at the 1.1.1 release notes and found the following:

"Fixed burn-in behavior with MP4 files; after the first burn-in track, no additional tracks that require burn-in will be added"

The "best practice" I have been employing to date is:
* Selecting forced only and burned in for the foreign audio track
* Selecting forced only for all English subtitle tracks

Since the current handbrake behavior sees the first English track as a burn-in track and will discard all other English tracks since they can't also be burned in, I believe I should be employing a different process, where the foreign audio track has "forced only" selected and the first English track has "burned-in selected". Is this what I should be doing?

If your output is an MKV file, all the tracks would be available, since they don't need to be burned in.

Indeed, PGS subtitles as found on Blu-ray are not compatible with MP4 as-is and must be burned in.

We'll need a complete encoding log to see more info about how HandBrake is handling things.

Output is MP4.

So, I am a bit confused here. Understand the English subtitles will need to be burned in to the MP4 images. It was my previous understanding that what got explicitly burned in was extracted from:
1) Foreign audio track: both forced and burned-in subtitles in my case as I'd select both ion Handbrake.
2) English subtitle tracks: forced subtitles only as I have 'forced only' selected in Handbrake.

with the result being the burned-in subtitles are the burned-in subtitles from the foreign audio track and all forced subtitles from any of the selected subtitle tracks.

As I understand the current Handbrake behavior I will get the 'forced only" subtitles obtained from the foreign audio scan and the burned-in subtitles from the first English subtitle track. This means that all forced English subtitles found will be found during the foreign audio scan and any burned-in subtitles from the first English subtitle track will be added as well.

Bottom line for me is I'd like guidance on what my subtitle settings should be to ensure I get all of the English subtitles correctly?

I will be glad to post an encoding log. Is that different from the activity log file (the one I posted did not include actual encoding activity)?

Thank you

You cannot have Blu-ray subtitles in MP4, they must be burned in. Only one track may be burned in.

If you want all subtitles from the source, your output container format must be MKV.

If you are using mp4, you cannot get "all of the English subtitles correctly", because mp4 does not support them.

Or, if you mean "a full set of subtitles, not just the forced ones", you need the OPPOSITE of the Foreign Audio Scan, which doesn't exist as an option.

You need to determine which subtitle track meets your needs by watching the source in something like VLC, that will allow you to change to each subtitle track, and determine which one to use.

I am sorry, but I think I've diverted this discussion off-track. The basic issue I initiated this thread with was that a change was made in 1.1.1 subtitle track selection behavior to hide all subtitle tracks that require burn-in after the first track (see below for the exact text in the release notes for 1.1.1):

Fixed burn-in behavior with MP4 files; after the first burn-in track, no additional tracks that require burn-in will be added

I understand that you can only burn in one subtitle track with MP4 files. Does "requires burn-in" mean the track has burned in subtitles that can't be added if a previous subtitle track also has burned in subtitles? Also, can a track that has burned in subtitles also have forced subtitles that I would be interested in?

As it stands, if I view a movie in VLC and want any subtitles from the 2nd English subtitle track I am unable to do so if the 1st English subtitle track requires burn-in.

Finally, since PGS subtitles are not compatible with the MP4 format, why does Handbrake even provide theoption to specify "forced only" for any of the subtitle tracks?

I am sorry about the rudimentary nature of my questions, but I am trying to determine the best configuration defaults for subtitles to use moving forward.

"Forced only" is a flag that MAY appear in a subtitle track.

When you encode to MP4 from a Bluray disk, you do not actually put any subtitle tracks IN the MP4. The one-and-only-one track is burned into the video, and the output file has no subtitle tracks. That's why you can't select others.

Assuming both subtitle tracks you want are PGS and your output format is MP4, that's essentially correct. The Selection Behavior dialog does not have an option to select second tracks, only first or all.

That should not prevent you from manually selecting the second track on the Subtitles tab. You simply cannot configure this and save it as a new preset; it's manual and would need to be done for every source where intended.

Are you able to select another track on the Subtitles tab (not in the Selection Behavior dialog)?

Thanks for responding BradleyS. To your question around selecting the second English subtitle track, the answer is no. This is because all other English subtitle tracks are completely hidden from me in the subtitle tab. I only see the foreign audio scan and first English subtitle track (which has burn-in selected).

I think this is related to subtitle defaults. The defaults I have are:
Track selection behaviour: All Matching Selected Languages
    Burn-In Behaviour: None

Add Closed Captions when available: selected
    Add 'Foreign Language Scan': selected

    Chosen Languages: English

I have done several reloads with different subtitle defaults. It seems to me that the behavior is that when a subtitle track of the chosen language is found, all other subtitle tracks are automatically filtered out. Based on earlier discussion on this thread and elsewhere, that behavior is fine if the first English subtitle is the one I want. But, what if I am interested in a different subtitle track providing director commentary of subtitles for deaf or hard of hearing people (SDH, I believe)? Is it possible that the Handbrake behavior is that when it encounters a subtitle track with burn-in subtitles it will automatically use that track, and subsequent subtitle tracks are completely ignored given you can't have more than one subtitle burn-in track in a MP4 file.

You should have the following button (highlighted in red).

I do have that button and I have tried adding additional tracks unsuccessfully. I tried:
    * Add All Remaining Tracks
    * Add All Remaining Closed Captions
    * Add All Remaining Selected Languages

In all cases, no additional subtitle tracks were added.

They won't add anything if you've already got a burn in track in the list AND the additional subtitles from the source would require burn-in.

You can change the one output change via the dropdown to another source track. But that would be it.

Ah, that gets me further! After deselecting burn-in of the English subtitle track (I needed to select burn-in of foreign audio scan and then deselect it as I could not explicitly deselect burn-in of the English subtitle track), I then added all remaining selected languages and now see the 2nd English track, with burn-in selected for it. If I repeat this process 3 more times I then see all 5 English subtitle tracks.

So, it sounds like adding new subtitle tracks will add them one at a time and if there are burn-in subtitles it will stop at that point. Is this the expected behavior of the subtitle selection UI? I am guessing the UI needs to only allow selecting one subtitle for burn-in. I will see it ends up being very tedious to have to add all English subtitle tracks iteratively. Is there a way to avoid this?

Sounds like you've actually tripped over a bug. You should not have been able to unselect burn-in for a PGS subtitle when your using MP4 files. You also should not be able to have 2 output tracks where PGS is the source type.

What will probably happen is the engine will simply ignore the invalid track selections you made when it encodes.

Yes, confirmed, there is a bug. You should not have been able to select the burn in.

And yes, you'll see something like:
[23:33:35] Subtitle pass-thru requested and input track is not compatible with container. One track already burned, dropping track 1.

    in the log.

Basically, you can't have 4 PGS subtitle tracks in MP4. You can burn exactly 1 of those 4 tracks in. That's it i'm afraid. Unless your willing to switch to MKV there is not a lot of options here.

Thank you for confirming. To verify my understanding, Handbrake will automatically use the first PGS subtitle track when creating the MP4 files. The burn-ins of this PGS subtitle track are always included. Because of this, subsequent PGS subtitle tracks are ignored as they can't be added to the MP4 file.

That's gotta be a bit confusing, because it does make it look like HandBrake doesn't see the additional tracks. Historically, the MacGUI used to let you select an additional track to add, then removed it and provided a popup explaining you cannot have more than one (burned-in) track of the given type in the output file.

Then again, now it lets you add the track, but silently remove it immediately -- which has got to be equally confusing. There's no perfect solution I guess.

Yep, quite confusing... What really matters, however, is that the first subtitle track with burn-in subtitles is used and any later subtitle tracks that have burn-in subtitles are removed by Handbrake. It seems the challenge in the Handbrake UI is how to clearly communicate this.

That said, the 1.1.1+ Handbrake behavior appears to be reasonable as it shows the foreign audio track scanning for forced subtitles and the English track has burn-in selected. Based on everything I've read previously on this thread, that represents how Handbrake behaves. If a second English subtitle track is added and has burn-in specified (per my description of the bug previously), the issue is the first English track's burn-in subtitles are used anyway.
