Settings for DVD Player requiring MPEG4

Description of problem or question:
I'm very new at video coding. I've done a lot of reading, but still a complete noob.

I encoded my kids' library in anticipation of getting portable DVD players for a road trip. I ripped from BluRay disks to my hard drive using MakeMKV, then processed using HandBrake with the "General -> Fast 480" preset. Unfortunately I neglected to notice that the players I purchased couldn't read H.264. Only DIVX, XVID or MPEG4. Unless I'm missing something, HandBrake only does MPEG4. I started reprocessing using the Fast 480 preset except in MPEG4, with a 720x480 Size. The file is MUCH smaller (less than half) and the DVD player can read it, but the results are horrible.

This is the DVD player. It has a 16:9 aspect ratio. A tv series I encoded fills it perfectly (but still horrible grainy picture). When playing a DVD the quality is excellent for SD.

I tried again bumping the quality to 18. It made the file *slightly* larger, but no visible improvement in quality.
I tried again, changing the Anamophic setting to "Loose". File was smaller than the first time, no visible improvement.

I think the activity log I pasted in below only shows the latest run. Instead of changing one setting at a time, I'm hoping someone can point me to a few changes that will help. Or do I need to purchase a higher-end program, like AnyDVD? Most of the moves have both DVD and Bluray disks... would ripping the DVD instead of Bluray help anything?

The MPEG4 encoder's quality method is QP not RF, so the numbers don't match up. You probably want somewhere between 4 and 12, but that also overlooks the fact that the MPEG4 encoder isn't very good at single-pass encoding at all. My recommendation in this case is to instead choose a sane average bit rate (maybe 1500-2500 kbps) and enable the 2-pass checkbox.

That is exactly the type of advice I was looking for! I'll try again when I get home.

This morning I tried adding various filters to reduce noise, but the estimated time jumped to over 5 hours. I knew there had to be something related to quality and the change from the H.264 preset to MPEG.

Simply Selecting "Average Bitrate" and checking 2-Pass gave beautiful results, thank you!

I couldn't tell the difference between 2500 and 1500kbps on my computer monitor (with a 1.8GB vs 1.1GB file size for a 2-hour movie). I'm testing a couple of runs at 1200 and 1000 to see if can tell. Maybe next figure out a way to make the video brighter.

Then start a massive queue of files to rip before the trip.

A given average bitrate will give good results on some videos and bad results on others. So going a bit high (like 2,500 for SD) isn't necessarily a bad idea even if you can't tell the difference with all content.

After a bit more scrutiny, I can tell the difference between 2500 and 1500 on my computer monitor. The higher bitrate is better overall, and somewhat noticeable when paying close attention to high-detail areas (like the bright red Scottish hair in Brave). It would be much more noticeable on a large TV.

BUT that's why I'm also encoding everything as 1080p in H.264, for playing on monitors and big TVs. The MPEG files are for the cheap DVD players. I probably won't go any lower, but going higher will severely limit the number of files I can put on small memory sticks (the players can only read 32GB). Plus I've got to get as many videos as possible recoded before we leave. I'll worry about dialing in the quality later.
