HandBrake produces unplayable MKV files.

Post by karipu »

Description of problem or question:

HandBrake produces unplayable MKV files.

Steps to reproduce the problem (If Applicable):

If I make MKV file with the HandBrake it's unplayable with my media player.
Same failed result whether the source is DVD or Blu-ray.

I have to extract the HB produced .mkv file with the Inviska MKV Extract and then remux extracted files with the MKVToolNix in order to get the movie playing.

Why HandBrake can't produce proper files?

What's wrong with the HandBrake?

HandBrake version (e.g., 1.0.0):

1.1.2 and latest nightlies.

Operating system and version (e.g., Ubuntu 16.04 LTS, macOS 10.13 High Sierra, Windows 10 Creators Update):

macOS 10.13.6

So, you want me to open MKV that I have remuxed and re-encode it with HB and post the encode log?

HandBrake makes valid MKV files, but some media players are sometimes unnecessarily picky. Usually remuxing with MKVtoolnix in a single step should suffice (unless the test scenario "1" described below works).

I see you're using FLAC audio, DVD subtitles and "peak framerate" for the video (HandBrake uses that by default). Does HandBrake's output work "out of the box" (no remux necessary) if you:

(1) set the framerate to "Same as source" and "Constant framerate" for the video track?

OR

(2) use another audio encoder, e.g. AC-3?

OR

(3) omit the subtitle track?

Well not sure what's up with your playback device then. Does remuxing with Mkvtoolnix (MKV to MKV) work?

I seem to recall someone having problems with a netgear box in the past so in all likely hood it's just picky or buggy firmware.

No, I first have to extract MKV with the Inviska MKV Extract and then remux it with the MKVToolNix.

Let me suggestion a slightly more exaggerated test...

First, extract the video from the disk using a different tool. MakeMKV would be a good start, because the result is an MKV file. I would suggest making sure all tracks within the title are extracted into the MKV; This topic over on the MakeMKV forum will explain how to do that.

Does the resulting MKV file play "as is" on your device?

Assuming it works, run that MKV file through handbrake, using the same preset as you are using with MDRP.

Is the resulting MKV file still UNplayable on your device?

Assuming it is still unplayable, if you take the handbrake-generated MKV file, and use mkvmerge to re-arrange track order, does the output MKV still fail?

(Trying to eliminate factors like MDRP and Inviska from the mix)

Given how HandBrake re-encodes both video and audio and the test without subtitle passthru failed, MDRP is already out of the mix, so to speak. Given how Inviska is used post-HandBrake, it was never in the mix to begin with ;)

If the raw MKV from MakeMKV doesn't play, are you SURE the device is capable of playing MKV files? Seems like it is more of a fluke when it DOES work.

It plays fluently every kind of MKV files I've dowloaded from the net.

Considering the NTV550 was discontinued years ago, when did you last update the firmware in it? It could simply be that it doesn't understand MKV files as completely as you think, since they've evolved slowly over the 7+ years since the NTV550 shipped.

Have you tried playing the handbrake (and MakeMKV) files on something newer, like Kodi or VLC?

My media player NeoTV understands and plays every kind of MKV fils – except those made by HandBrake.

My question is:

What happens to the MKV file when Inviska extracts it and MKVToolNix remixes it?

Why MKVToolNix can make playable file and HandBrake don't?

What is the difference between the files?

Can developers find the solution and fix the problem?

You said that the MKV files made by MakeMKV were also unplayable - which means the issue goes beyond handbrake.

And you said that a file remuxed by mkvmerge directly, rather than using inviska first, also doesn't work, so, "what is inviska doing?" is a very good question.

I'm sure I'll be corrected if I'm wrong, but, I believe all the muxers used in three programs (MakeMKV, mkvtoolnix, and handbrake) are derived from the same source library.

That is indeed incorrect. I'm not sure whether MakeMKV uses libmatroska and libebml (like Mkvtoolnix), but HandBrake uses libavformat for all muxers.
