Apple TV 1080p30 vs Apple TV 540p30?

Post by Redwingedblackbird »

Description of problem or question:

I've started to rip my DVD collection for viewing on Apple TV, and figured that an Apple TV preset with "same as source" framerate was probably the all around best combination of quality and speed. Especially given that I am keeping the DVDs in a binder, and just want to get rid of the hundreds of cases.

But I'm not sure whether to use the Apple TV 540p30 preset because it closest to the 480p of DVDs, or use the Apple TV 1080p30 preset because I will be primarily watching these movies on a 1080p TV? As far as I know, handbrake doesn't upscale, but I'm not sure if my Apple TV (3rd gen) or my Samsung TV will do it.

I ripped a version of Star Trek 2 using both the ATV 1080p and ATV 540p presets and couldn't notice any different on my iMac. Except for the the fact that the ATV 540p rip was 1.54 gb, while the ATV 1080p rip was only 1.43 gb. So there is obviously some difference, I just don't know what.

Any advice on which preset I should use? Is there a reason to use the ATV 540p preset over the ATV 1080p in this instance?

Thanks

Use the 540p preset for DVDs.

The 1080p preset picks a slightly lower quality per pixel, which is why it's smaller, since it's intended for 1080p files with more pixels.

Thanks... after reading your reply, I figured the same since increased quality is probably worth a measly 0.9 gb extra. Especially with the price of storage now days.
