x265 [info]: using cpu capabilities: none!

Post by alpo »

System Setup:
- HandBrake 1.1.1
- Dual Xeon E5530 CPUs
- CentOS 7.5 (Kernel 3.10.0-862.11.6.el7.x86_64)

Issue: When calling HandBrakeCLI, output shows "x265 [info]: using cpu capabilities: none!"
Question: Any assistance to ensure the CPUs capabilities are being used by HandBrake would be greatly appreciated.

HandBrakeCLI is called with the following:

Code: Select all

INFILE="/srv/samba/movies/InsideOut.mkv"
OUTFILE="/srv/samba/movies/InsideOut-x265.mkv"
HandBrakeCLI -i $INFILE -o $OUTFILE --no-dvdnav --main-feature --format av_mkv --markers --no-optimize
--no-ipod-atom --align-av --encoder x265 --encoder-preset medium --encoder-profile Auto --vb 14 --two-pass
--turbo --vfr --audio-lang-list eng --first-audio --aencoder copy:dtshd --audio-fallback copy:truehd --ab 512
--arate 48 --auto-anamorphic --keep-display-aspect --width 1920 --height 1080 --no-itu-par --modulus 2
--no-detelecine --no-hqdn3d --no-nlmeans --no-unsharp --unsharp-tune none --no-lapsharp --no-deblock
--rotate 0 --no-grayscale
Checking cat /proc/cpuinfo gives:

Code: Select all

flags : fpu vme de pse tsc msr pae mce cx8 apic sep mtrr pge mca cmov pat pse36 clflush dts acpi mmx fxsr sse sse2
ss ht tm pbe syscall nx rdtscp lm constant_tsc arch_perfmon pebs bts rep_good nopl xtopology nonstop_tsc aperfmperf

vnmi flexpriority ept vpid dtherm ida
HandBrake was compiled using "./configure --launch-jobs=$(nproc) --launch --disable-gtk" and both yasm and nasm were also installed.

That is odd indeed, but what we probably need in this particular case is a build log (build/log/build.txt). Also the log will be a lot more readable if you build with --launch-jobs=1 ;)

There may be a larger issue afoot. The first pass seemed to execute without error, but the second pass failed with error code 3:

Ok, I believe I can solve that by changing the HandBrakeCLI option --vb 14 to --quality 14. Please correct me if I'm wrong, though.

As for the "using cpu capabilities: none!" error, I did find something interesting as well as a possible fix. Recall, HandBrake uses x265 version 2.8. The "Building HandBrake for Linux" guide (found here) recommends getting nasm from the RPM Fusion repository. From the x265 encoder documentation, located here, the README mentions that x265 2.8 requires nasm 2.13 or greater. However, the RPM Fusion repository provides version 2.10.

When I use the official nasm repository to install nasm 2.13 and then re-compile HandBrake, the following shows up in HandBrake's build log:

Code: Select all

...

After re-running HandBrake, the "using cpu capabilities" flag shows:

Code: Select all

x265 [info]: using cpu capabilities: MMX2 SSE2Fast SSSE3 SSE4.2
And if you'd like to follow along in your hymnal...

For CentOS, to install nasm 2.13, run:

Code: Select all

yum install mercurial
wget https://www.nasm.us/nasm.repo -o /etc/yum.repos.d/nasm.repo
yum --enable-repo=nasm install nasm
Then re-compile HandBrake with:

Code: Select all

./configure --launch-jobs=1 --launch --disable-gtk --enable-x265 --arch=x86_64
Thanks to Rodeo for the advice and guidance. If there are any more issues, I'll let you know.

You can use more launch jobs once you know HandBrake builds correctly, one job is only useful when troubleshooting build-related issues.

--quality <value> is correct for constant rate factor ("quality-based") encoding, but (FWIW) then --two-pass --turbo is ignored since quality-based encoding is a single-pass operation.

Excellent. I'll remove the --two-pass and --turbo switches. Thanks for the clarification. And thanks for the help today - I learned quite a bit and hopefully the tutorial in my previous post helps shed light on the nasm issue. Please let me know if I can contribute anything. Cheers.

The release documentation doesn't discuss nasm at all, as this requirement due to newer contrib libraries was added after 1.1.x.

The documentation for latest master branch, which does require nasm, suggests getting it from the nasm repo: https://handbrake.fr/docs/en/latest/dev ... entos.html

I have just compiled both nasm and x265 to correctly identify my CPU capabilities...

Code: Select all

x265 --version
x265 [info]: HEVC encoder version 2.9
x265 [info]: build info [Linux][GCC 5.4.0][64 bit] 8bit
x265 [info]: using cpu capabilities: MMX2 SSE2Fast LZCNT SSSE3 SSE4.2 AVX XOP FMA4 FMA3 BMI1
How do I now include this version in my HandBrake source tree to recompile that with this 2.9 version?

The git files only show x265 2.8 and with old header files x265_config.h and x265.h.

Thanks,

Paully

We'll be updating to support it sometime in the near future. It's literally just out so we'll let it soak for a bit to make sure there isn't anything majorly wrong with it before pushing it.

Looks like a pretty small update so your not missing out on anything.

Thanks for the quick reply.

I am trying to get HB to use x265 but quicker... it is currently showing noasm and cpu capabilities none.

I have recompiled nasm and x265 separately on my Linux system and they are good.

How do I get the hb compile process to redo x265 with asm (currently showing noasm)?

Build HandBrake from source: https://handbrake.fr/docs/en/latest/dev ... linux.html

It's not using your system x265. It's using a built-in copy.

Yes, which is why I am asking how to rebuild it again so that this does not happen:-

Code: Select all

x265 [info]: HEVC encoder version 2.8
x265 [info]: build info [Linux][GCC 5.4.0][64 bit][noasm] 8bit+10bit+12bit
x265 [info]: using cpu capabilities: none!
1. I have compiled my system nasm and x265 from git sources successfully so I know that x265 can detect my CPU correctly (see above post).
2. When I rebuild HandBrakeCLI from source (git pull, etc.) it does not detect asm and therefore does not detect my CPU and is slower to transcode.

So, do I just delete the whole directory, git clone it again and compile again?!?

Thanks,

Paully

It's sufficient to delete the build directory, but if unsure, a fresh git clone won't hurt.

Done... and problem, solved!

Code: Select all

[21:05:04] starting job
...
x265 [info]: HEVC encoder version 2.8
x265 [info]: build info [Linux][GCC 5.4.0][64 bit] 8bit+10bit+12bit
x265 [info]: using cpu capabilities: MMX2 SSE2Fast LZCNT SSSE3 SSE4.2 AVX XOP FMA4 FMA3 BMI1
Not sure if it will help the speed of transcode but let's see!

Thanks for your help.

Regards,

:-)

Oooooo, yes... 3 fps instead of 1 fps on x265 medium so I'm happier with that... which means my 36 hour blu-ray transcodes will come down to about 13 hours which is fine with me!
