Choppy video and slider bar not working in Windows

Post by alainbriot »

Description of problem or question:
I convert my movies on a Mac. When I play them on windows the video is choppy, it starts and stops, and the motion slider bar, where you move the movie forward or backward, is not working. Basically the movies are unplayable on windows.

What is the correct preset I need to use to convert a movie from Mac to play correctly on Windows ? I want to keep the original movie size and the movie will be delivered on a flash card or a DVD and played on a computer.

Steps to reproduce the problem (If Applicable):

HandBrake version (e.g., 1.0.0):
1.1.1

Operating system and version (e.g., Ubuntu 16.04 LTS, macOS 10.13 High Sierra, Windows 10 Creators Update):

Mac Pro, OS 10.12.6

Not so much a preset issue as setting the "Web Optimized" flag in the GUI (not sure what the label is on the Mac), which will re-arrange the "directory" in the file to be at the beginning, which will often fix the slider issue on playback.

I tried it and it helps. Thank you. What about the choppy video -- it starts and stops randomly. Are there settings in Handbrake that can help fix that?

Try the fastdecode encoder tune option.

I have another question, which is related. What are the best settings for a movie to be played on Windows 10? From what I read Windows 10 does not natively support the mp4 format. The movies I create are embedded in Adobe Acrobat PDF files and clients who use WIndows 10 cannot play them. They keep getting a message from Acrobat saying they need a different video player. Is this an encoding issue or a system setup issue?

Files embedded in PDF files depends not on Windows 10's capabilities, but the capabilities of your PDF reader software.

I've played both MP4 and MKV files using the Win10 movie player. The operating system itself doesn't "natively support" any media format; it depends on the playback software you install.
