Need preset suggestion DVD to .mp4

Post by rminten »

Description of problem or question:

I'm converting some DVDs to .mp4 and unsure what preset to use - hopefully someone can help with some basic questions. I'll be playing these back on widescreen 1080p TVs. Here are my questions:

1. When choosing a preset, do I consider the source resolution or the target (playing device) resolution when choosing either 480p or 1080p? Or is this not the right way to make this decision based on source and/or target resolution? I've tried Fast 480p 30 and Fast 1080p 30 and can't really see a difference (as I expected since the source is 480p). I don't want any 'stretching' of the video - I want it to look just like the source.

2. Will choosing a 1080p preset 'stretch' the video to wide/1080?

3. Are there any upscaling options? I'd rather do a slower capture if the picture can improve, but not sure if there is anything I can set to upscale from 480p.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Steps to reproduce the problem (If Applicable):

HandBrake version (e.g., 1.0.0):

1.1.1

Operating system and version (e.g., Ubuntu 16.04 LTS, macOS 10.13 High Sierra, Windows 10 Creators Update):

Windows 10 64-bit

The GUI won't upscale. The resolutions in the presets are "maximum", in that if you put a 2160p source through a 1080p preset, you'll get a 1080p result, but a 480i source will come out as 480p.

Thanks for the information. So for a 480p source should I use a 480p preset regardless of the size of screen I'm playing it on?

I won't say that doing that would be bad OR good, for this reason:

A 480 present will likely have some filters enabled that make sense for a DVD source (remove interlacing and telecine), while a higher-resolution preset might have those filters turned off.

Why? Bluray is rarely interlaced or telecined, so there is a slight speed advantage to leaving those filters out on higher-resolution sources. It doesn't mean it doesn't happen, but it is rare.

Not so rare. The original bluray spec is all interlaced: SD, MTS, AVCHD.

Current BDMV is as follows:

frame rate Aspect ratio
4K UHD 3840×2160 60p 16:9
3840×2160 59.94p 16:9

Well it is rare to find interlaced Blu-ray discs of popular/mainstream studio movies and TV series.

Yes, interlaced is very rare on BDMV (usually 24p), which is what we purchase.
Still common for BDAV (50/60i), which many of us still shoot as for docos and Indies.

Lot of guys ask on the Architect forum if they can make a compliant 30p or 60p BluRay.
Ha! Sure, if if you print it as 720p or flag it as 1080i 60.

I'm a bit late to the party, but wanted to mention a few things.

Nearly all of HandBrake's official presets enable comb detection and decombing, for use with interlaced/mixed/progressive sources, regardless of resolution. It just works 99%+ of the time. The Production presets are the notable exception as such settings do not suit that workflow.

Also, the quality setting differs by resolution. 480p presets will encode video with slightly higher quality setting than 1080p presets, because the expectation is that 480p will likely be blown up to fill the playback display, magnifying any imperfections. Perceptual quality is similar, and of course using a 1080p preset with lower resolution sources won't significantly harm the output (nor will it upscale, as previously mentioned).

You can, of course, adjust quality to your liking as well. See https://handbrake.fr/docs/en/1.1.0/work ... ality.html
