Video encoding is lossy, so even the same size or larger output has removed data.

It sounds like what you really need is a software player that can crop off the top at playback time, but you're fighting that for whatever reason.

Is there a primer on compression that I can read somewhere?

I'm most curious to know if I take a MPEG2 Blu-Ray rip and apply H.264 or H.265 lossless (both video AND audio) what would be the expected reduction in file size?

Isn't Blu-Ray already H.264 encoded?

Blu-ray is H.264.

Encoding a DVD to H.264 Lossless will result in a file many times larger than the source. Your not "compressing" the mpeg2 source. You're compressing the decoded output of that Mpeg2 source which is many times larger.

Well not when it's MPEG2.

Do mpeg2 bluray even exist out in the real world?

Then there’s VC1.

Seriously though, I wouldn’t get too hung up on quality loss, even projecting to 12’. There’s a point where it’s visually imperceptible and mostly academic.

Take a look at the Adjusting quality documentation article: https://handbrake.fr/docs/en/1.1.0/work ... ality.html

It provides some guidelines for quality settings. I would not use an RF value lower than 16 for 1080p Blu-Ray source. You can adjust quality with “-q 16”. The section on display size and viewing may also interest you.

The real answer is to stick to discs but I need a different pj for that. In the short term I guess I’m compressing.

tried my first blu-ray tonight (finally figured out how to get at my drive where all my movies are stored)

Is this supposed to take 9 hours?!? Or is that because I am decoding and encoding to a network drive? My main PC is wireless G at the moment.

Network connections usually do not affect the speed of an encode; I rarely see network activity get above 5% on a fast encode.

What affects speed is the CPU and options selected. If you provide an activity log, we can point out where you can make improvements for speed, or where you're going to encounter bottlenecks with your chosen options.

5% on typical wired gigabit ethernet is more bandwidth than his 802.11g has in practice.

What, you don't believe manufacturer's claims for effective throughput of wifi?

If the connection is "good enough" to watch a BD rip without complaining, it should support at least a "real time" stream of 24fps coming into handbrake. 9 hours would be a 10fps or slower rate.

But, until we see the log...

somehow weird subtitles got hard printed on to the movie...weird.

it's like a VH1 Pop Music style facts about the movie. Didn't even know that was on there.

The "weird" subtitles are just that - picked up by the Foreign Audio Search as the "right" track, and burned in. FAS works well... a lot of the time, but not always.

Since you're dealing with MKV files, there is no need to burn in any subtitles, but you'll want to make sure the first track is the one you want to match up with the first audio track.

Your main speed issue is going with the "veryslow" encoder preset that is part of the "Super HQ 1080p30 Surround" handbrake preset, which does not necessarily mean better quality, but it usually means better compression. Your source has a lot of movement and "busy backgrounds", which veryslow and RF=16 will try to preserve, at the cost of encoding speed.

You can get a LITTLE bit back by setting the detelecine and decomb/deinterlace filters to "off" (maybe 5% faster at most). You can ignore interlacing on most BD sources, because the majority of BDs are progressive, rather than interlaced. And most are not telecined. Except titles from NISAmerica and a few others, that are both interlaced and telecined.

I would suggest encoding one "busy" chapter from the movie with different parameters, and see if the are acceptable to you. Vary the RF value from 20 to 16 and see if it affects your perceived quality of the video, especially once it is projected. Try the different presets available.

You can tweak many of the settings in the "Super HQ 1080p30 Surround" preset in the GUI and save it under a different name, for use from the command line.

If quality is the tradeoff, then I'll just live with the really long encodes.

Still not entirely sure how to get rid of those subtitles.

also the result file was 15GB vs 35GB original.

side note - this isn't 100% of what I wanted but it's super neat that it works at all. Thanks to all who have provided help!

also at this rate of encode - I assume I don't need to worry about burning up my network attached drive?

Quality is entirely subjective. There are people like me that are happy with RF=20 for the devices I watch video on, and others that are upset that the blacks are not quite black enough with RF=8 when viewed on their Sony Orgasmatron 16K UltraSuper HD TV. And a lot of people at different points in the spectrum.

In other words, my tastes are not necessarily your tastes, so "Play" is important. It doesn't cost money (other than for electricity) to run multiple short tests to see what is acceptable.

As to the subtitles, I am not sure what the selection rules are on the preset you're using - my needs for subtitles do not usually correspond with the "factory defaults", so I always create customized versions with "my" rules.

Especially when their display is miscalibrated.

@jcwillia1 --subtitle=none

I'm a quality snob and believe -q 16 to be more than sufficient for just about anything. There's a reason the Super HQ presets use 16-18, depending on resolution. Even blowing up a DVD for projection... any artifacts seen are more than likely part of the original source, at which point it is better to consider denoising with NLMeans than adjusting encoding quality. As they say, your mileage may vary.

thank you

where do I put the quality indicator?

HandBrakeCLI -i "Z:\1 Discs\Transformers.mkv" --subtitle=none --preset-import-gui --preset=“Super HQ 1080p30 Surround” --pad="width=1920:height=1080:y=2" -o "Z:\1 Discs\Top\Transformers.mkv"

also I get what you all are saying about quality - I just don't understand why I can't copy the quality of the original - whatever settings are being used in the source material, use those same variables in the re-encode.

Blu-ray is not lossless; whatever settings were used in the first place did NOT give an exact copy of the original studio master -- using the same settings a second time cannot give you an exact copy of the copy either…
