Too high ETA for a DVD source on HEVC Matroska encode

Post by DJViking »

Description of problem or question:
Tried HandBrake to use HandBrake to rip and encode my DVDs to HEVC (without loss of quality).

Chose the Preset Matroska - H.265 MKV 576p25.
Changed the quality factor from 20 to 12.
Added one subtitle
Nothing else changed.

My FPS is abysmal, at only avg 3.75
Encoding an DVD has ETA 12 hours. Is this normal time consumed to rip a lowly DVD at 576p25.
I have never used HandBrake before, so I don't know if this is time it actually takes or if I have done something wrong with my preset settings.
I could use MakeMKV instead which only takes less then 10 minutes to rip, but I wanted an HEVC encoded rip.

Running:
HandBrake 1.0.7
OpenSUSE Leap 42.3

Hardware:
Intel Core i7-6850K CPU @ 3.60GHz
NVIDIA GTX GeForce 1080
Samsung M.2 950 Pro SSD
Samsung Samsung Blu-Ray Writer SE-506AB USB-2.0

This is my chosen preset settings:

Re: Too high ETA for a DVD source on HEVC Matroska encode

Post by BradleyS »

Sounds about right. When you lowered the rate factor you asked for better quality which takes even more time to encode for an already slow encoder relative to x264. Note also that HandBrake does not use your GPU, so that’s mostly irrelevant.

You may also wish to update to HandBrake 1.1.0.

MakeMKV is a ripper, handbrake is an encoder. Ripping does not take that long.

In fact, a very good work flow is "rip with a ripper, encode with an encoder", because the ripper can be ripping other disks much sooner than waiting for an encode. Ripping needs you there to change disks; encoding can continue on its own for days at a time, without your intervention, if you chose slow options.

Using RF=12, you're asking for better quality than you pulled off the DVD, in my experience.

RF=12 is telling X265 to preserve quality that I doubt even exists in a DVD source.

The more quality you preserve, the slower the encode. Set it back to 20 and encode one chapter. Then compare the two by playing them, not by looking at free frames.

HandBrake 1.0.7 is the latest from the Packman repositories for OpenSUSE.

I will try with RF=20. All I wanted was to preserve the original DVD quality.

I think I will try Woodstock's suggestion. I could rip several DVDs fast, then set HandBrake to encode them all.

openSUSE Packman builds are known broken and on our black list. Sadly, we have no control over them. See https://handbrake.fr/docs/en/1.1.0/get- ... brake.html

You will be better off building from source in the long run.

For DVD, RF 16-20 is usually best.

Why is the Packman build broken?
This is the Packman RPM spec file that built the 1.0.7
https://pmbs.links2linux.de/package/vie ... c?expand=1

Sadly though there are no other repositories for OpenSUSE that has built HandBrake. Not sure why...
Could try to build it myself from the sources, if successful perhaps set up an OpenSUSE OBS for HandBrake.

Seems it is not easy to build HandBrake on OpenSUSE

Ask them; HB doesn't produce or support their someone else's build.

Various parties produce broken builds for political reasons.

I set RF=16, With the Preset slider to medium. Avg 4FPS ETA 12 hours
With RF=16 and Preset to "faster", I got avg. 12FPS and ETA 4 hours.
With RF=16 and Preset to "superfast", I got avg. 20FPS and ETA 2.5 hours.

Preset: Adjusts encoder settings to trade off compression efficiency agains encoder speed.
Does this preset slider affect quality or is it just how much compression it does?

Preset superfast is using 800% CPU (12 cores), aprox 70% of all cores.

I think I found my preferred settings:
RF=16
Profile: ultrafast
Disable Crop
Keep Aspect ratio
Avg. FPS 45
ETA 1h20m (+15min ripping with MakeMKV)
HEVC Matroska
Source: DVD9
Target: ~1GB

It is an very old DVD movie. Perhaps not much to get from lower RF or slower profile.
Now I can begin to clear some shelf space encoding my old DVDs to HDD.

Not as fast I wanted, but still decent.

Is anyone encoding DVDs with more or less equal quality faster than this? I have a fairly new high-end Ìntel CPU.

No filtering? Some people like to live dangerously; enjoy your combing.

HEVC is slow. Your speeds look about right. At higher qualities like what you’re doing, x265 isn’t much better than x264, so you might want to use the latter for speed.

I'm not sure either. From your truncated Activity Log it looks like decomb filter is active.

I think I have changed my stance regarding crop. It looks a little better after the encode from 4:3 source, but I kept aspect ratio.
