Strange "credit" subtitles auto-burnt into video output

Post by rickbarnsley »

I'm using Handbrake to make personal backups of my DVD collection.

I've had no difficulty with Star Wars IV and VI, however whenever I apply the same presets to V, I get strange results...

Throughout the video I get strange "credit" style subtitles appearing randomly.
Here is an example: https://pasteboard.co/drqrZjEhx.png
and here... https://pasteboard.co/drt1asFZi.png

These do NOT appear when the DVD is played back natively.

I am using 1.0.7 of the Windows version of Handbrake. The version of Windows I have is Windows 10.
The only subtitles I have selected is the Foreign Audio Scan - I've tried removing this but I still get the burnt in credits...
I'm using the Super HQ 576p25 Surround preset. I'm using an MP4 container, and libdvdcss.
No error is shown whilst encoding.

Here is the log... has anyone any idea how to stop Handbrake from burning this into the rip?

Re: Strange "credit" subtitles auto-burnt into video output

For the encode you have in your log, you said to search for a "just foreign audio" track. The way that works is that handbrake looks for a subtitle track that has no more than 10% of the "regular" subtitle tracks... and it found:
[20:18:25] Subtitle track 0 (id 0x21bd) 'English (Closed Caption)': 1645 hits (0 forced)
[20:18:25] Subtitle track 5 (id 0x2bbd) 'English (Director's Commentary)': 2118 hits (0 forced)
[20:18:25] Subtitle track 6 (id 0x2dbd) 'English (Director's Commentary)': 194 hits (0 forced)
[20:18:25] Found a subtitle candidate with id 0x2dbd
I'm guessing that this track, by its label, is "just who is talking right now".

Are you SURE it is burned in - many players will automatically display the first subtitle track found, unless told otherwise. Handbrake found no "forced" subtitles in any track; if told to only burn in forced ones, nothing would be burned in.

Tell handbrake to not burn in ANY subtitle tracks; Star Wars generally puts the "foreign audio" subtitles directly into the image already. With a DVD source, the subtitles will still be available if you want them.

0x2dbd will be burned in. I suppose we could eventually discard tracks with "Director's Commentary" flags for Foreign Audio Search…

But would anything be burned in from 0x2dbd with the "forced only" flag set, with no forced subtitles in the track?

I haven't tried it with FAS, but I often use "forced only" to create an empty subtitle track when I want to hide a "full" subtitle track from a player that defaults to playing the first track.

Hi all,

Thanks for the advice - I tried unchecking the "burn in" flag on the Foreign Audio Scan and it fixed the issue.

Turns out there is no foreign audio for V, but there is for IV and VI hence the discrepancy in behaviour with the same settings.

Many thanks for your help once again.

Yes. Forced Only combined with Foreign Audio Search only affects track selection.

1) if Forced Only is checked and a track with forced packets is found, it gets selected (with Forced Only set), go to step 3

2) if Forced Only was unchecked OR if no track was selected at step 1, HandBrake looks for a subtitle with less than 10% of the packet count, when compared with the largest track, i.e. the track with most packets; if such a track is found, it gets selected (with Forced Only not set), go to step 3

3) if a subtitle candidate was found, it gets added to the subtitle list (and we remove a duplicate track if the added track was already in the list with the same configuration), else nothing happens (the subtitle list is left untouched)

This is the first time I've heard of a false positive with this algorithm, so it works very well most of the time.

It would seem Rodeo is correct that we should investigate rejecting tracks marked as director's commentary.

I have a Cast Away and MiB Blu-ray which both have a commentary subtitle track which get picked up on the current algorithm also. The MiB movie had one of the worms pop up in different parts of the screen once in a while saying something weird which was kind of funny, but not what I wanted.

Because of those two movies I now extract all the subtitles and look at them with Subtitle Edit before so I don't burn those types of subtitles in anymore. There aren't many discs I've found with them, but any improvement would help.

Thanks for the info FrostByte. I've created an issue on GitHub to track any progress we make on improving the selection: https://github.com/HandBrake/HandBrake/issues/764

Great, I can test those movies out again once complete and the nightlies are back up, etc
