DVD BR Subtitle position

Post by LaFouine94 » Sat Mar 11, 2017 4:39 pm

I'd love being able to re-position subs on video, from DVD or BR subtitles.

Because somtimes sub appear in the middle of the screen, after image is resized.

I'm using the last release of VidCoder

On Windows 7

Seems like a VidCoder or playback software issue, not HB.

DVD (VOBSUB) and BD (PGS) subtitles are images. Unless you told handbrake to burn them in, they're passed through to the output file for the player to render.

Since you didn't see fit to include the handbrake activity logs so that we know what you're dealing with as source and the settings vidcoder told handbrake to use, we can't help you beyond this general response.

Sorry for being not very precise, but this is my first post in this forum, and I'm not very used to that.
I'm precisely in the case of burning subs, and I select the subs from the original DVD.
I know that VOBSUB are images, and that the possibilities of changing something are very limited, unless to do some OCR, or use and external srt file.
But I think it would be nice just to reposition the VOBSUB image, and (even better) to resize it before burning.
It was a time when I was using GordianKnot, and it was possible to do this, because GordianKnot firstly extracted the idx and sub files. Then I could reposition and resize, and use this new idx and subs to burn it in the image (I hope my explanations are clear, because I am from France, and my English is so so...).

I have my latest VidCoder logfile to show you, but I don't know how to join something in the post ? Do I have to insert my logfile in the body of my post ?

Thanks again for your explanations and your help.

We're interested in the handbrake portion of the log. If the log is more than about 20,000 characters, it is best to post it to a website and link to it here. But under that size, you include it in your message.

The first step is to open the log in a TEXT editor on your system. Select the whole portion that was generated by handbrake, and the copy it into your system clipboard.

Once you start your message here, the best way to include the log within your message is with "code" tags; If you are using the "full editor", there is a button that looks like "</>" which will insert them for you, but you can manually add them, by typing:

and then paste the contents of your log from the clipboard, with your cursor between the ][.

Handbrake does resize the image-type subtitles when burning them in; It does NOT change them when passing them through.

Hello Woodstock,

Here is a link for my VidCoder.log file :
https://www.dropbox.com/s/3ylyrj8yujt26 ... r.log?dl=0

And here is an example of the result of this encoding, with the subs burned in the image :

Personnaly, if would have liked to make the subs smaller, by resizing the VOBSUB images, and place it a bit lower on the image.
That would be great if handbrake could to that.
On some cinemascope movies, this change is important, because without doing something, the subs are much larger than high... like on the image below :

Looking at the log, I do not see an indication of which version of handbrake VidCoder is using.

Given the cropping and resizing done, the subtitles were "properly" rescaled before being burned in. You need them to be "not scaled", actually.

What happens if you do not burn them in, and let the player render them on playback?

For more fine control over the subtitles, though, you need different subtitles. VOBSUB is limited to what the disk author thought was "the right size and position"; the font size and color and positioning are not up to you.

Hello again Woodstock,
I use the latest version of VidCoder, using Handbrake 1.0.3.
If I do not burn the subs, the player has also very light possibilities to move and resize.
That's why I was wonderning if it was not a good idea to had in handbrake the ability to use as external files, the .idx and .sub files that could have been extracted from the DVD by an external software, and prepared, resized as needed.
Then, as for .srt files, you could have the ability to use it as an external source, and have the choice to burn it or not.
In VidCoder, it would give something like this, after integration in the GUI :

I think it would be worth to develop this feature, and I'm not a specialist in programming, but if handbrake knows how to use the internal VOBSUB of a DVD, perhaps it is not that much work to let it do the same job but with an external VOBSUB file.
Anyway, if my proposal is accepted, I would be very pleased to help you test it if nececessary.

Hello,

Is it necessary to open a thread on Github to propose this enhancement ?
