Encode to Dolby Digital Plus (EAC3) for 7.1 channel audio

Post by Salem874 »

Please describe what you would like to see added to HandBrake:
Support for the encoding of audio to Dolby Digital Plus (EAC3) when creating/transcoding video files using Handbrake

Why would you like to see this added:
This would allow for the conversion of owned Blu-rays with various 7.1 audio soundtracks, to MP4, while retaining the (often) 7.1 audio channel mix and using Dolby Digital. Not many home audio systems support pure multichannel AAC, and even some PC software do not support 7.1 channel AAC (even though 5.1 is supported). Offering the (perhaps automatic) use of Dolby Digital Plus for 7.1 mixes would offer a much wider device target for the output files

What version of HandBrake are you currently running:
0.10.5

What operating system and version and you currently running (e.g. OSX 10.11, Windows 7, Ubuntu 14):
Windows 10

Just add my support for this to hopefully to be added in a release sometime down the line!
E-AC3 is streets ahead of standard AC3 for the additional streams it can support and the higher bitrates.

We have an E-AC-3 encoder (at least in the nightly builds), but it doesn't support encoding extensions that allow additional channel configurations. Also, our MP4 muxer doesn't support E-AC-3 yet, so it's MKV-only for now.

I remember posting this a while back:

viewtopic.php?f=26&t=33446

but as far as I can see there is still no access to a E-AC3 encoder in the win gui, is it cli only?
