Is it possible to change default audio track after encoding

Post by mdhankins »

Please detail your question or problem in as much detail as possible:

Hey guys. I recently encoded a bunch of movies with Handbrake. I noticed that the audio level was rather low when playing one in MPC-HC and discovered that the default audio track is Surround rather than standard Stereo. Does anyone know of any tools kinda like MKVToolnix that works on mp4/m4v files? Just for kicks I tried MKVToolnix and got it to work, but the output file was of course MKV. I've standardized on m4v files in my collection, so I really don't want to have to go back and re-encode these files (or re-mux or whatever the right term is). I've been googing to look for a solution, but either there is none or my google-fu sucks.

Tell us about your environment. What version of HandBrake? What version of Windows are you running. etc.

My PC is Windows 10 64bit. I'm using Handbrake 0.10.5 64bit.

If there was any exception or error displayed, please copy it and paste it here:

N/A

Please include the scan or encode log:

Code: Select all

I don't think a log file is really necessary for my question, but I can try to provide one if someone really thinks it is necessary.

Re: Is it possible to change default audio track after encoding

At this point it would also be very helpful to know how to choose the right audio track (standard stereo, not surround) when I'm doing the encoding. I tried doing that one one occasion and ended up with an audio track where (besides the normal audio) someone was describing what was going on, perhaps for vision impaired folks. Not exactly what I was trying to do.

Hello,

this can be tricky, as there is no "standard" way of tagging audio tracks. I've also been bitten by "director's commentary" tracks and the like, and I know of no fail-safe method of avoiding them
I try to select the correct audio tracks when ripping the disc in MakeMKV, as it shows them in the internal sequence of the disc with main tracks usually up front. But that's not guaranteed to work.

However, if you end up with the wrong audio, here's what you can do to avoid a full second conversion:
Do a second "dummy" conversion of the movie with all video settings at very low quality, very fast, very low resolution. Include all potentially useful audio tracks in good quality. This will finish quickly, as video encoding takes most time. You can then identify the useful audio tracks in the generated movie, and remux them with the video from the first conversion into a new container. This will again be quick, as no further conversion is involved.

For remuxing, you'll need a special tool besides HandBrake. On MacOS, Subler works well for MP4 containers, and MKVToolnix for MKVs. On Windows, I've heard good things about MP4Box and MKVToolnix, but no personal experience.

Coming back to your first question, these remuxing tools also allow you to flag a default audio track.

Cheers

Personally, I have MakeMKV rip everything, then play the result in VLC to find out which tracks are "correct" for my usage. I use that information for setting up the handbrake encode.

My job is automating things; I've discovered that video doesn't automate very well.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I've been getting into using MakeMKV to do my ripping lately. It for the most part has worked very well, except for ripping a Blu Ray of Revenge of the Sith. For whatever reason I'm getting lots of MEDIUM ERRORs when I rip. Kinda frustrating since it is a pristine disc that has only been played once or twice before. Not even one scratch. I've seen suggestions from some people that this is part of a copy protection scheme and that I just need to find the right track on the disc.

Anyway... thanks guys. Yeah... video definitely does not automate well.

Could be a bad Blu-ray drive.

I considered that, but this is the only disc that I've had trouble with. Also, the blu ray drive is brand new and was the top rated model on Amazon. Maybe it needs a firmware update. I'll look into that next.
