Blu-Ray to MakeMKV to HandBrake with Subtitles/CC in iTunes

Post by railhead »

I promise I've been searching for an answer to this, but haven't found one. Here's my situation:

1. I'm archiving my Blu-Ray movies onto my iMac for playback in iTunes.

2. I use MakeMKV to copy the movie.

2a. When I playback the MKV in VLC, I can toggle English subtitles on or off from the subtitles menu and they display properly.

3. When I drop the MKV onto HB to encode, I encode for AppleTV 3 -- and no matter what option I select on the subtitles panel, I cannot get the subtitles to toggle in VLC or iTunes. After encoding, they're gone -- unless they are Foreign Audio, then they appear. OR, I can force them to burn in and be always viewable -- but I want to be able to turn them off or on as needed.

I know I must simply be overlooking something, but I'm at my wit's end trying to figure this out.

Thanks for any help!

MP4 doesn't support Bluray subs, and Apple doesn't support MKV, so you're boned.

The simplest way to reach your goal is to look for subtitles for your movie online (as SRT file), and pack them into the finished mp4 using e.g. Subler. Having to check for synchronisation issues is a bother, though.

Generally speaking, if online subtitles were created from a Blu-ray, sync issues are very rare. Blu-rays, unlike DVDs, almost always have the same frame rate & timing all around the world.

Yes, when you find the right .srt file, it remains synced throughout, however I recently d/l hundreds of .srt files for bluray (makemkv) and at least 30% of the time I had to try several to find the correct one. Depending on the movie, there can be a variety of editions, and they are not always correctly labeled.

Exactly!

I just had a hell of a time finding SRT files for the "Life on Mars" series, only to finally realize that I had the "International version" on DVD. This misses a few short scenes from each episode compared to the "British version", thus subtitles are not compatible... and you may not notice if you only check the start of each episode.

Of course, the DVD box fails to mention this detail :x

you can extract subtitles from the mkv file using subler or mkvextract (part of MKVToolNix) depending on the type of subtitle.

You should look at MP4Tools. The free version will allow you to test whether your mkv files will convert with the subtitles intact. The author also has a tool called SUBtools that takes subtitle conversion into MP4 compatible format a step further.

I use Subler to OCR the subtitles from the MKVs I've ripped to SRT files. There are small errors here and there, but in general they are fine, and they fit my movie perfectly of course since they come from the same source material.

I am having semi the same issue but instead of iTunes I am creating a plex server. I noticed that handrake on mac will not give me the subs like myself and the OP want but I have noticed that handbrake for windows will do this. Is there some reason why one would do it and not the other? I have no problem ripping on my mac while I am at work using MakeMKV and then moving them over to my windows machine where my plex drive is in order to run them through handbrake there it just get a little tedious. I thought both the mac and the windows versions were the same?

The windows and mac version should be the same, can you post logs from both encodes, thanks.

I would have to go through 2 encodes: 1 on mac and one on windows for me to give you that and that would take 6+ hours for each one (laptops for both).
I realized all of this because I accidentally put the same .mkv file in both of them and on the windows version I was able to burn in the foreign subs and default my english subs. The mac version would let me burn in the foreign subs but nothing else. I even downloaded the the nightly build last night for my mac and I was able to now burn in the english subs but not default them at all. I do not want to have to burn in the eng subs for cases were myself or my wife do not want the subs on.

Your old logs should still be there unless you removed them.

If not just encode a chapter or 10 mins of the mkv.

Both encodes are of the same chapter of the same movie with what should be all the same settings except that the eng subs are defaults in the windows and not on the mac at all...
