MKV file encoded using handbrake. Made mistake with 2nd track audio and now need to reencode 2nd track audio codec.

Post by churd60041 »

I am using the USB port (connected USB flash drive) on my Roku 3 to play all my ripped/encoded videos.
Roku 3 is connected with HDMI cable to my Denon AVR-S710. I then connect the Denon to my Samsun HDTV.
Everything is playing perfect except audio is not being recognized by my receiver as surround sound. Being recognized as a stereo channel. I can get surround sound by manually change input on my receiving to surround sound but that is not the same.
So ---- on my latest ripped video I decided to make a change with the audio encoding process.
I went back and decided to change the 2nd track audio codec. I CHANGED the 2nd track codec to AC3 Passthru from DTS Passthru.
That made it work. My Roku 3 now identifies the audio correct and my Denon Receiver is now oututting DDS and DDT surround sound. This is great news and bring my question for your expertise and help?

Question and Problem (thank you in advance for your replies - Don)
How to reencode all 50+ movies that I have encoded with Handbrake. I do not want to lose video quality I only want to correct the 2nd track codec (ie. replace DTS Passthru with AC3 Passthru). Everything else stays the same on all MKV videos.

Current version of Handbrake is 10.2.7286 32 bit version for Windows 10.

Handbrake cannot do anything to a file without reencoding the video.

Your best bet might be just to start from scratch.

Are their any other programs that can reencode just the 2nd audio track. Copy Video, Copy audio 1st track and only change audio 2nd track?

If you have the original MKV file, google will find you the "mkvtoolnix" tools that will allow you to pull the audio track from the original MKV file, and merge it into the already-processed file. This is the fastest method, because nothing needs to be recoded, just tracks replaced.

Worst case scenario, if you need to reencode (sync issue), encode with UltraFast setting rf=51, then extract the video from first encode, extract audio from Ultrafast, merge them into your final mkv.

I am having a like issue with mkv files and dvd files using handbrake. I am sure makemkv is okay as are my dvds. The common denominator is handbrake using high profile setting. I am using the handbrake settings for audio and conversions done prior to nov 2014 are fine. Can someone point me in the right direction? I just recorded 60 movies and all are boogered up with the picture being great but the sound is out of synch. My mistake was not chevking the audio synch. Thanks.

Audio sync issues are often player-related. For example, several android players can't keep audio and video in sync when playing MKV files, but work fine with MP4.

But that is a separate issue from what is being discussed here, so a separate support request topic, with logs, should be started.
