mkv tag-editor (without encoding)

Post by linuxuser »

Since I don't know an easy to understand tag-editor under linux for movies, I suggest to add this feature to handbrake. Handbrake has already the possibility to enter tags if the video is encoded, so there should be a button to write the tags without encoding.

I know there is mkvpropedit, but it is very limited and/or not very good documented. I don't know how handbrake does the job, but IMHO it should be enough to create / edit an xml file and then do "mkvmerge --global-tags ..."

The "Tags" tab in the linux GUI is *only* there because there are no good tags editors that I could find on linux. This tab does not exist in the other HandBrake GUIs and will not ever be added to the other GUIs. The other HandBrake developers have grudgingly allowed me to keep it, but the official stance of the HandBrake project is that HandBrake is *not* a tag editor. That is best left to software that is specialized for tag editing.

Some day I may find some time to write a dedicated tag editor, at which point I would remove the "Tags" tab in the linux HandBrake GUI. But I will not be adding more tag editing features to HandBrake and patches for such will not be accepted by the HandBrake team.

Sorry

I fully agree. What do you use, if you have to write metadata in encoded files?

I hope some day will be soon ;-) I have no idea how the tags are coded with HB, but I hoped it could be not a lot of work. Anyway _I_ think this is an important part to enter metadata before (and after) encoding. Why should this be done with another app? It sounds like lame should not support tags with mp3.

Is there a thread where I can read why tags should not be supported by Handbrake? I cannot understand this. Metadata is so common with photos and music, why shouldn't it be used with video? If metadata have to be written with another app it sounds like you have to use an own app for printing with an wordprocessor.

Where did *anybody* say tags should not be used with video? You are making up things now.

No. A good UI for entry of metadata will be quite complex and therefore deserves it's own dedicated UI. It should support a variety of additional text fields plus the ability to attach things like chapter thumnails, movie posters, fanart, etc. Personally, I would like to be able to import all the metadata generated by xbmc (.nfo files and all the associated art) and package it all into the mkv or mp4 files. The UI might support a "library" mode where it shows you your entire collection, has filters for grouping categories of video, yadda, yadda, yadda... and allows editing of all the associated metadata. Have a look at an application called MediaElch to get an idea where my thoughts go with this. This doesn't fit in with the transcoder paradigm. There is a ton of things you *should* do in a metadata editor that just don't belong in HandBrake.

We try hard to avoid Feeping Creaturism in HandBrake. Piling all this on top of the HandBrake UI which is optimized for transcoding just unnecessarily complicates it. HandBrake does not need to be the one app to rule them all.

First I want to thank you a lot for the possibiliy to write tags. I am really happy about it! I see you see the tags from another point. Most times I use the tags for my private camcorder videos and not for movies, which I bought. I think this is a big difference, I am happy with the fields I get at the moment.

There is a minor issue with the tags, don't know what the problem is exactly. But I have to say again, that I am happy as it is, since there is no better alternative. Sometimes I don't see the plot I entered. The last time I think it was too long, I try again with a shorter plot now. But there have been shorter plots too, which could not be seen in the encoded video. Okay, I may make mistakes, but I don't believe always, especially since I check this before encoding. I copy the plots from Wikipedia, most times with the middle mouse button, and rarely with ^C.

I have looked at MediaElch. Does it make sense to use it without xbmc? I tried to import the handbrake files and some fields have not been recognized inlcuding the title field.

Edit: It looks like the problem is not the size of the plot, a shorter plot too is not shown with mediainfo after encoding.

Edit 2:
I used the same settings again and encoded a 3rd time, changing only 2 words to 1 word and I can see the plot, which has now 98 words.

Unfortunately the log does not show metadata info. Can you paste both versions of the plot in code blocks so that I can see what worked and didn't work, and try to reproduce the problem myself?

Well I think, it doesn't depend on the words, maybe a memory leak, really no idea, just guessing.

I used this plot:
http://www.moviepilot.de/movies/der-sue ... tzenhausen

mit Leib und Seele Bahnhofsvorsteher in dem süddeutschen Örtchen (did not work)

mit Leib und Seele Bahnhofsvorsteher im süddeutschen Örtchen (worked)

I think if I try it at few times with "in dem", it will work. The interesting thing was, that it didn't work immediately after it didn't work again. So it took 4 times with different plots to get a video with a plot. The other videos worked with a 2nd encoding and the same plot.

This doesn't look dramatic too:
top - 17:34:25 up 3:30, 2 users, load average: 0,18, 0,55, 0,62
Aufgaben: 348 total, 2 running, 345 sleeping, 0 stopped, 1 zombie
%Cpu(s): 26,7 be, 1,7 sy, 14,5 ni, 56,9 un, 0,2 wa, 0,1 hi, 0,0 si, 0,0 st
KiB Mem: 8133868 total, 5384924 used, 2748944 free, 1428 buffers
KiB Swap: 713724 total, 0 used, 713724 free. 3506936 cached Mem

I think this was the problem
https://trac.handbrake.fr/changeset/6575

If you be sure to move the cursor out of the Plot entry box before starting the encode, it should always work.

I tried now a plot with a lot more (2-3x) words than before and it worked without problems. Maybe you can check if a tab could make problems. When I don't pay attention I am copying too much and maybe with a tab at the beginning or the end, but normally I delete it. I am pretty sure, that there was no tab with the problem movie in this thread, I am just guessing. Maybe you can cut blanks and tabs and similar characters at the beginning and the end.

I always move the cursor out of the plot field to another field, of course there could be an exception. Normally the plot is not the last field which I enter and I am pretty sure I moved the cursor to another field with the movie mentioned above.

I would like to mention too, that I click on the Queue-Botton, after I started the encoding.

What should be a fool proof behaviour to get rid of this problem? I can imagine that this is the problem, but otherwise I am pretty sure I moved the cursor out of the box. Should it help to change the tab, eg to video or audio?

HandBrake 0.10.1 (2015030800) doesn't write metatags, like title, year, a.s.o although the fields could be filled out. Ist this by design? I remember that I read, that metatags are not available with stable versions, but now I see, that the fields to fill out are there.

Edit: In the meantime I could create a m4v-version with 0.10.1 with tags, so now I know, this version can generate tags. Don't know what is fooling me.
