Keep 16/9 cropping ratio
Hi Handbreak community!
Most TV display are now 16/9, could we force the 16/9 ratio for Width and Height (Picture Settings Size tab)?.
While cropping a video, in the same way as the existing "Keep Aspect Ratio", just add a "16/9" check-box.
The math are straightforward

Re: Keep 16/9 cropping ratio
I'm unclear if you want the video distorted or some kind of bootleg pan&scan?
For 4:3 sources do you want the top and bottom chopped off, or the picture stretched to fill the width?
Similarly for 2.4:1 sources do you want the sides chopped off, or the picture stretched to fill the height?

Re: Keep 16/9 cropping ratio
I guess he wants the "optimal" way -> no stretching, simply cutting the width or height, depending on what is too big to achieve 16:9 ratio
Re: Keep 16/9 cropping ratio
Yes Djfe, that's exactly what I mean. To keep the best of the video to fill in the screen.
Would it be possible?
Would it be possible?
Re: Keep 16/9 cropping ratio
I guess what mduell wanted to say is: there are several ways and there is no real "default" way and some people might expect different results
though I think the "optimal" way described above is probably the most common case

Re: Keep 16/9 cropping ratio
A cropping option that keeps the 1920/1080 pixels ratio at the better width or height of the picture.
Exemple:
- video 800x600 is cropped at 800x450
- video 1280x600 is cropped at 1066x600
Exemple:
- video 800x600 is cropped at 800x450
- video 1280x600 is cropped at 1066x600
Re: Keep 16/9 cropping ratio
Meh. This would be convenient, but not advisable; better left to manual intervention IMO.
Re: Keep 16/9 cropping ratio
May be better anyway to let your teevee do the cropping if you want full screen display.
Re: Keep 16/9 cropping ratio
That's the problem with cropping 4:3 or 21:9 material to fill a 16:9 screen; the "best" of the video will change repeatedly due to the framing for each scene/shot chosen by the cinematographer and director. The "pan" in "pan&scan" refers to manually reframing each shot during the conversion.Tom34 wrote:To keep the best of the video to fill in the screen.
Re: Keep 16/9 cropping ratio
@TedJ, you are right for TV pros that prepares videos movies for TV broadcast... and they are not using Handbreak to pan&scan.
On the other hand, I am a simple video user of Handbreak. And with my experience, I never get annoyed by a movie I cropped using Handbreak.
This 16/9 cropping feature will help people like me, to easilly compress videos for TV watching, without doing the 16/9 math each time.

Re: Keep 16/9 cropping ratio
Problem is, cropping is a destructive feature, and such things are unpopular among software users and developers. Your teevee has all the options it needs to fill the screen.
Re: Keep 16/9 cropping ratio
First you can save space by cropping during encode
Second even in VLC it's not easy to tell him to crop to 16:9 so that you get full width not only in full screen mode but also in windowed mode

Re: Keep 16/9 cropping ratio
Press "c" until you get 16:9??Djfe wrote:Second even in VLC it's not easy to tell him to crop to 16:9 so that you get full width not only in full screen mode but also in windowed mode
Re: Keep 16/9 cropping ratio
well, that will probably work, haven't looked into it much
I don't need this feature in particular anyway, since I use autocrop in Handbrake (so that the player can decide how to show it)
I just wanted to say that it might make sense for some people, but in the end it's up to the devs
