Optimal Resolution for Apple TV??

Post by joeyc923 »

Not a real video nerd, so I'm hoping to find some here ;-) btw, MEDIA FORK ROCKS!

Anyway, I'm wondering what the best res to rip my 16:9 DVDs is. it shows source res as 720, or 700 pixels wide, and I've tried ripping some sutff under that larger resolution. It transfers OK to my 5G 80GB ipod, and so

I'm wondering if I should rip everything in this native 720 x 4XX res rather than what I was planning on, 640 x 3XX. Do we know if apple TV will support this higher resolution? Is this res even noticiebly any better?

Since no one has an Apple TV yet, we can't really say. I know some of the folks here have them on order, but until someone gets one and tests it out it's crap shoot at best. All you can do is go by what Apple Tech Specs page says and hope for the best, at least for now.

Just *don't* turn on Anamorphic, and you'll be set. You want a width of 720, but *not* a height of 480. Height should be, like, 404 or lower.

So, pretty much the default dimensions MediaFork will give you.

After dynaflash gets his pre-ordered Apple TV, we'll be able to put together a new setting intended just for it, but Main profile x264 should play fine. The only caveat is, we can't be entirely sure Apple won't require some magic words hidden in the file to load it onto the AppleTV. I expect supporting it will be easy (I hope I don't regret those words) and that, most likely, it will play any MPEG-4 file QuickTime can play by default.

How about hacking dynaflash's AppleTV so it plays anamorphic? That way it would be a great box for movie archives! :)
