After source scan, no data in "title" or any other field

Post by pland01 »

First, apologies from someone who is only MODERATELY computer literate. As in I can use software and configure some advanced settings, but I can't do command-line stuff without explicit directions and can't read logs. I've tried to follow the rules for all the things I need to do and check before posting here and have gotten nowhere. I would appreciate help getting this sorted out and me back up and running.

Awhile back, I decided it would somehow be a good idea to try a nightly build. I won't do that again. It didn't help me rip the DVD I was trying to rip (I have the latest version of VLC and, now, the latest published build of Handbrake). I also couldn't rip anything else after downloading that nightly build. I've done all I know to do to uninstall and start over but to no avail. I just installed and ran the latest Windows 32-bit build then tried again with the latest 64-bit build (which won't run since I have a 32-bit system) plus I updated the libdvdcss.dll file from VLC and here's what happens: When I go to the Sources and click on the DVD title, the software does nothing. I select "Source", "Open Folder" and then select the DVD and HB scans. After the scan is complete, where I used to get a selection of titles to choose from, I get an empty box. Nothing has changed with my hardware and I get the same problem from all 3 DVD drives. I have tried this while running the DVD in VLC and with VLC closed, same results. I've tried as many solutions as Google can return with no luck. I'm pretty convinced that I screwed something up trying to install that nightly build, but I would have no idea how to verify that... Thanks for the help!

This is the latest scan log:

libdvdread: Encrypted DVD support unavailable.
You need to use a program that supports ripping encrypted DVDs. Handbrake does not have built-in support for that, and many of the work-arounds for doing it are no longer available

There are several options out there. I use MakeMKV myself, but there are others.

I'll try that, but I'm not totally convinced. HB/VLC run fine on my Mac laptop. On my Windows XP desktop I have been re-trying DVDs I ripped from that computer already that I know used to work fine and they're not ripping now. You still think that would solve the problem?

Did you recently update VLC on the Windows machine? The DLL that made it possible to rip DVDs in handbrake was changed in v2.x of VLC, and the new one doesn't work with Handbrake.

Makes no difference, as this never worked under Windows. VLC-assisted decryption was only ever available under OS X. For other platforms, libdvdcss had to be installed in the right location manually.

Yes, I have updated VLC. Yes, prior to that I had manually installed libdvdcss (instructions for which I cannot seem to find now to retry that route). Prior to whatever I did that broke my setup, all I had installed and all I used was VLC and Handbrake, plus that manual .dll install. It worked great.

I have installed MakeMKV now and the first couple of days that went well. I closed all my programs and shut down for the night one night. Now I'm trying to figure out how to get MakeMKV set up to make HB work again... it seemed to have done whatever it needed to automatically when I ran it the first time. Is there a quick and easy way to use MMKV to bypass encryption so that I can continue to use HB to decode? I like HB's UI and simplified, selectable output formats and want to keep using that. Since I've gone ahead and downloaded MMKV, all I have to figure out is how to configure that so HB can continue to do its thing...

I sure appreciate the replies and help, folks.

It appears that, through MMKV, I have to "open disc" and let the program scan the disc before I try to open it in HB. I have 3 dvd-roms that I queue from. Is there a quicker way through this, or is that the solution I'm looking for?

UPDATE: Tried ripping a DVD this afternoon. It technically worked, but the video was a total loss. Lots of snow with occasional color. Based on my description above of the process I used, what'd I do wrong and how can I keep from doing it again?

You need to rip the disc with MakeMKV, and then you'll get some mkv files which you then feed to Handbrake.

If you want to just use the DVDs in the drive, then you'll need something that does decryption in the background like AnyDVD.
