Best way to rip live concerts

Post by HikaruGunner »

HI, I'm trying to rip a live concert from dvd, and I want to keep audio at 5.1

Which audio settings should I choose to compress the audio to decent levels? I'm thinking of using fAAC codec with 384 kb bitrate.
Also which mixdown should I choose? Automatic? Dolby Prologic II? 5.1 channels?

Thanks for the help

You don't want or need to compress the audio. Your size savings will all be in the video compression.
Correct setting is "Auto Passthrough."

No, your 5.1 is already optimally compressed. PCM audio is a different story, but you don't have that. Compressing the video to x264 gives you ten times more bang for the buck. Why mess with concert sound for a few percent?

Please post your encode log if you would like further assistance, thanks.

"Same as source"... leaving it at DVD resolution will give you the best picture you can have.

me personally, using CRF 20, my ~2hrs concert dvd encodes are usually between 1.4-2GB... i used x264 medium (with 256 stereo/DPLII faac) for my past ones that i haven't really gotten around to reconverting to my now preferred x264 veryslow(+applicable tune)@lvl3.0 (with 192kbps stereo/DPLII FDKAAC)... tested one concert dvd (which at CRF 20 was 2GB, which was also the largest of my concert encodes) at CRF 18, and it came out to be 2.64GB...
so unless your concerts are 2 1/2hrs+, from my experience, you shouldn't go past 3GB unless you use a CRF lower than 18...
i always use strict anamorphic with my dvds... i have to downscale my blurays as my iPod touch only accepts up to 720p...

Methinks the OP needs to do some test renders and see for himself.

So I tried:

Resolution: same as source 720x480

Quality: 20 RF

Audio: source: DTS 5.1 channels
codec: Auto passthru

Duration of the video: 01:44:33

The size of the output file after encoding is.... 3,12 GB

Re: Best way to rip live concerts

Post by moneymatt4life »

found a couple reviews of this dvd, and 2 of them mentioned that the dvd isn't very "clean" (meaning some noise, video filters, etc)... whereas my concert dvds are fairly clean, which helps compression...
2.02GB is video, you can try a slower preset (between fast-veryslow if you're up to it) to see if that helps otherwise you'll have to use a higher CRF, and 1.10GB is audio... so you'll have to either sacrifice video quality to get the final filesize to your comfort level or you could transcode the DTS track to AC3 640kbps(or install a nightly build and use fdk_aac 384kpbs or higher if your player handle multichannel aac), but you shouldn't transcode lossy audio unless you have to...

Re: Best way to rip live concerts

Post by HikaruGunner »

ok so I tried again this time using:

Resolution: width: 650

Quality: 20 RF

Audio: source: DTS 5.1 channels
codec: faac, bitrate: 384
mixdown: 5.1 channels

I still got a file of around ~2gb. I would like a file of around 1.5 gb, but I see than nothing can be done about that. I may say that the video quality is excellent though.

About the audio, to me it sounds good quality, but then again I'm no audiophile and I only have a set of creative dtt 2500 5.1 speakers.

Try at full resolution, RF 23 or 24. Also, it might be that AC3 @ 448 Kbps would sound quite a bit better than faac (not quite sure, TBH, you'd have to try it).
