General Subtitle Help

Post by wunderlong88 »

Last year I used Handbrake to convert several ripped dvds to mkv to use on Plex. At that time I had success doing this so that I could turn subtitles on or off when they were available on a particular title.

Forgive me as I know this information must be commonly available but I can't seem to remember or figure out how to do that again. I keep finding information on hard/soft subtitles and Handbrake but I didn't have to use other software when I did this before.

When I go to the subtitles tab and I see English (VOBSub) listed as a source, I see Forced Only, Burn In, Default as options. How do I set these to have subtitles available to turn on or off as needed?

Just select the stream you want, and don't select Forced, Burn in, or Default.

If you continue to have problems, please post an encode log.

Ok...I tried that and they are burned in and I cannot turn them off.

Your original question specified going to 'mkv', your encode log shows otherwise. If you want your subtitles to be selectable then output to mkv.

Sorry, I meant m4v. I typed mkv by accident.

So, how do I get subtitles with m4v? I have them where I can toggle them on/off on some of my past titles that I encoded.

MP4 doesn't technically support VobSub tracks. It's an unofficial extension/bodge that a few players support.
HandBrakes new MP4 muxer doesn't support this extension yet. We've submitted patches upstream to libav but these haven't hit in a release yet.

So for now, we only support The MP4 spec, which means no selectable VobSub Tracks. Burn in only.

So, what do I select so that they don't burn in? So far everything I've tried makes them burn in.

Also, I know I have some other titles that I made this work for. Is it a difference in the way the dvd is encoded?

This is all way over my head! Thank you for your help!

There is nothing you can do. Only MKV file output will allow you to achieve what you what.

This is a change that was made to HandBrake. What you want is no longer supported. The functionality will hopefully return at a later date, but there is no ETA for this.

Ok...I understand except that I don't know what to check to get it to not have subtitles at all?
Since I can't have them where I can turn them on/off I want them off always but I keep getting them burned in.

Just remove the track completely from the subtitle tab. If the list is empty, it won't add any subtitles.
