First generation Apple TV fitted with Broadcom HD Decoder

Post by rustyintegrale »

Hi, I have a first generation Apple TV fitted with a Broadcom HD Decoder.

Could someone please give me settings that will make the best use of this please? Obviously I want 1080p output and most of my material will be from Blu-Ray or DVD.

Thanks for any advice. I'm currently running Handbrake version 0.9.9 x86_64 (2013051800) on a Mac running Mountain Lion.

It depends on if you are running xbmc on osx or linux. If running it on linux (like crystalbuntu or atvconer) it can render 1080p to the display and frankly pretty much playback anything (including raw decrypted blu ray).

However if running xbmc on osx even though the chd card can decode 1080p xbmc will only output 720p to display as there is not enough ram left running osx.

So, in short let us know what os you are running.

Either way though, you would be in pretty good shape with the AppleTV 3 preset.

Hi, thanks for that. :D

I used ATV Flash to set it all up if that gives you a clue! ;-)

Here it implies that I already have the tools required to get true 1080p HD once the card is installed. What do you think?

As per davilla the dev that wrote the chd drivers for xbmc, though it can decode 1080p but it cannot render it to the display due to a lack of free ram if its running os x. I believe firecore is an os x implementation.

That said, the atv 3 preset in HB is still your best bet imo. The appletv 1 only has 256 mb of ram installed and no, there is no way to upgrade the ram.
