Corrupted Video

Post by Roldy »

Hi Folks,

Grateful for some help in resolving this. My source is 'Wonders of the Solar System' which I have ripped from Bluray using MakeMKV. The ripped mkv source plays perfectly. When I encode the mkv with handbrake I get corrupted video with flashing blocks of colour. I have tried encoding some other videos ripped with MakeMKV and all have worked without issue.

The video related applications that I currently have on my system are as follows:
- MakeMKV 1.8.5 x64
- HandBrake 0.9.9.5530 x64
- VLC media player 2.1.0 x64
- DVDFab Passkey 8.1.0.4 (I have this disabled)
- K-Lite Mega Codec Pack 10.0.5 (I think I did a 'lots a stuff' install)

Some of the fixes that I have tried that haven't worked include:
1.Using strict anamorphic
2. Using a deinterlace filter
3. Using out of the box defaults
4. Constant framerate
5. Disable LibHD Features
6. Enable LibHD Scanning and Encoding

I have included below the scan log from a 10 second preview that I attempted.

The library that Handbrake uses does not work with Interlaced VC-1.

You'll have to use a package that does accept that codec.

Libav, which HandBrake uses for file based input, has improved it's interlaced VC-1 support fairly recently. It may be worth checking the HandBrake nightly builds in case we've updated since then.

Thanks very much everyone for the fast replies. Sadly I didn't have any better success with the nightly build. I did try another package (RipBot264) which purported to handle interlaced vc1 but alas it failed to even begin encoding. If anyone can recommend a good vc1 capable package then I'd be interested to give it a go, otherwise I'll just put this one on the shelf for now and maybe try my luck with a future HandBrake build.

It won't work in the nighly, as it's not a supported codec.

You could try StaxRip, as I've heard that works.

No. We still need to port the QSV patch to Libav git master first, among other things.

???

It's only unsupported because it's not yet fully implemented. It will work in the nightlies at some point.

Which is not now. So it's still not supported.

Any updates on when interlaced vc1 might be supported?

It's still not working in the latest nightly.

None yet. We haven't bumped libav yet, nor have they released the next milestone release for them either so. Will be a little while yet.

They released their first alpha a week or so ago, so we'll see.
