HandBrake and VLC

Post by HandBrake »

Starting with VLC 2.0, HandBrake can no longer read protected DVD content via the VLC application due to changes in the way they package their application.

If you try to transcode a DVD now, what will likely happen is your output will be all scrambled and unwatchable, or the encode will just outright fail.

This means it's now up to you to find suitable 3rd party ripping software (if it's legal to do so under your local laws. You'll need to do your own research here as it varies worldwide and there are often exception clauses that may apply.) to remove the protection before feeding it to HandBrake. Google is your friend.
