How is AppleTV3 preset

Post by decio86 »

Gentlemen, (and ladies ;) )

My apologies if this post exists already, I promise I did search, but what is the opinion of the AppleTV3 preset? I previously ripped my home collection of DVD's, but NOW I have a flat screen with 1080p and the AppleTV (newest generation 3?) and I'm considering purchasing a Blu-Ray Drive for my PC and starting the collection rip all over again for my Blu-Ray's. Is it worth it? Is it true 1080p? I'm using AnyDVD to rip, and i'll be using the new AppleTV3 preset to convert.

Your opinions are greatly appreciated. Oh and yes I know there's a huge disk space requirement, but I'm willing to pay that. I just HATE all the garbage that Blu-Ray disks make you watch on a purchased disk, and I'm really disappointed in Apple that they have stopped the ability to watch the itunes extras (special features) on the new appletv. They were barely holding be with their extras anyways. The extras on the blu-ray disks contain WAY more!

Thanks in advance!

Only you can judge if it's suitable.

But for what it's worth, it works well for most.

Is it as good of quality as a blu-ray disk?

Thank you for your reply. Just hoping to get a bunch of opinions on quality before I purchase a blu-ray drive for my pc.

How good is your eye sight?

There is always loss when re-encoding something. Most people won't be able to tell the difference with that particular preset though.

I have finished about 7 Blu-ray encodes so far and I have to say the Apple TV 3 preset is impressive.

Monsters Inc., was a 1080p rip using the default settings of the preset and it came out great. I have a keen eye and scrutinize everything. Only thing I found on my 55 inch TV was slight (and I mean slight) smearing with sullys hair with movement. I then re encoded with a RF of 19 and that went away. I chaulk that up to compression.

Then came The Dark Knight Rises, again starting with the default Apple TV. This time I changed the output size to 1920 x 1080 (it originmnally wanted a 1920 x 816) and turned anamorphic to none. This allowed the movie to switch from IMAX to 2.35:1 as needed. I encoded at a RF of 19 because I was noticing the slightelst bit of smearing on faces with a test encode. With 19 it was crystal clear. The default settings for the sound mixes seem to work well without playing with them. When played through a AVR with HDMI the down mixed DTS (which I believe gets converted to DD) AC3 track was used. I suspect because it comes from a DTS source it gets encoded at a higher db. So be ready to adjust your volume when the woofer kicks in lol. Although it picks up the dialog adjust in the mix so I'm not sure. Just seemed louder at a given db level setting on the AVR.

Those are a couple of examples for you. If you are not worried about the lossless audio (wich I would challenge anyone with a moderate system and normal ears to hear the diffrence in) and can sit at a reasonable distance away and enjoy a movie. You'll be hard pressed to find a diffrence between the encode and the source.

I've completed over 600 Blu-ray encodes with the Apple TV 3 Preset and have found that the default setting is very good.

The only change I made to the preset, is that the default preset likes to encode at 30fps, I changed that for blu-rays to same as source, (being the source is at a lower frame rate for movies, resulting in a smaller file.) Now for anything you may take off from a Tivo source, (broadcast / Cable TV) then the 30fps is a good setting, due to broadcast TV is at 60fps in the USA.

I also use the "WEAK" noise reduction filter to remove background noise on some films, which has next to no effect on the image quality, but has a big impact on file size. Any higher noise reduction setting does becomes noticeable and is only used on films that have excessive grain & noise, (used only to reduce file size) I've had a few films, that were excessively noisy, (Santa Clause the Movie comes to mind) it encoded to about 10GB in 1080p, but with the noise filer set to "STRONG", the file size dropped to about 6GB and the move still was very clear, just missing allot of grain and noise, small amount of detail was lost, but not much.

Not all Blu-ray movies are the same, so some of them start out soft looking and with considerable grain & noise, these films are the ones, were you can get away with more noise filtering than those that start out very clean and crisp looking, where you wouldn't want to apply any noise filtering. As you can see it subjective, according to your taste.

I have modified the original Apple TV 3 setting and saved them off as my own custom presets, just to make applying them easer.

Peak Framerate means "same as source, up to 30 fps", not "constant 30 fps".

Good to know!

Not really apparent, as to how it is presented in the interface.

Thanks Rodeo!
