20Gb file to a single dvd5

Post by Levan »

I have 20gb file and I want to fit it to a single dvd
I really do not care if it will be playable on anything except pc and even more I am not even interested in streaming it from Dvd, all I want from it to be a backup file

So can you tell me if I can somehow select for the output file size to be limited to 4.7 GB

one more thing and this is not that important can you share some good rendering settings ??

thank you in advanced

bitrate = desired size / duration

teh maths is hard

There are many bitrate calculators that can be found online to produce your desired filesize. Or do the math yourself.

The High Profile preset is your best bet.

Thank you for the replies

I read online that if you do not check "Large File Size" Output will be limited to 4 Gb is that a fact ?? and Will mkv/theora will be limited to 4gb or will it work only with x264 and mp4 ??

No. If you check large file support, Handbrake writes the mp4 to be useable if it's over 4 GB.

I don't know about the Theora issue.

So my best bet is like "mduell" mentioned is High Profile

But if i chose High profile I still have sliders to work with so I should ignore them and start rendering ??

You aren't going to use the sliders, you're going to determine your target bitrate and use that in the bitrate box.

One more question if you do not mind

Does "High profile" Caps the maximum file size or I must go with trial and error principle
example I set average bit rate to 5500 after rendering file size is over dvd 5 limitation, I will start re rendering only with the bit rate I will think will work like 3500

really do not want to go true trial and error method :(

Dang. Here's "teh maths"
Time (sec) X Bitrate (Mbps) X .125 = File Size (MB)

Or, you could use one of the many bitrate calculators as was suggested.

Handbrake no longer offers a target file size. Nothing in the Handbrake set up is aimed at a target file size, but instead targets a quality level. Since Handbrake is encoding to fit a quality level some scenes will take more bits, and some less. If you want to target a file size, you need to use the bit rate options, and as JohnAStebbins, mduell, and musicvid pointed out, do the math.

If you still have problems with files being too large, you could try using VidCoder which does support a target file size. However, all VidCoder support issues have to be taken care of at the VidCoder forum, and not the Handbrake forum.

A 20 GB BluRay is "probably" 2+ hrs for the main title.
It is possible to squeeze that onto a DVD as a file, but the quality would be less than elegant.
If encoded at the optimal bitrate, 720p would look great on playback.

But as opaque as the OP seems to be, I wonder if this is really just a next-generation "700MB" question?

Step by step instructions.
  1. Open 3ivx's bitrate calculator.
  2. Select an output size of 4472 MB.
  3. Enter your source files duration.
  4. Enter the combined bitrate for your audio tracks.
  5. Hit the calculate button and copy the result in kbps into HandBrake.

As I mentioned before, in one of the locked target file size threads, yes.

If we're lucky we'll skip past DVD9 and go right to BD25.

Thank you everyone for the information you provided you were huge help
Now I know what my next steps will be so thank you :)

wow bit rate calculators are amazing

I found an easy way to preserver space
Bust out terminal and type

Code: Select all

ffmpeg -i input.fileextension output.ogg
make sure not to specify any thing because specifying things is for girls
the result will be small file size and disgusting quality :)
any way thank you for everything

one more thing I know this part will be off topic but

Too bad ...
Was quite useful to easily scale down Blurays ...
Is there any chance to have that back, as an option ?

Nope. Didn't work correctly and was a bad idea anyway.
