Preventing Bus Errors

Post by Ratboy »

I'm a Terminal neophyte, and appreciate any help anyone can offer.

I recently figured out (with the patient help of people on these boards) how to convert my Video_TS files to MP4s and have started queuing multiple titles by separating the operations with a semi-colon. However, about 20% of the time I receive a "Bus Error," and Terminal moves on to the next film. Is there any command I could insert between conversions that would reduce the likely hood of a bus error?

This is the message displayed by Terminal:

Code: Select all

HandBrake 0.8.5b1 (2007042001) - http://handbrake.m0k.org/
2 CPUs detected
Opening /Volumes/Media Hard Drive/Movie Name/VIDEO_TS/...

+ title 1:

  + duration: 00:21:59
Bus error
Thanks for the help.

Your destination path is incorrect

I've mistyped the destination path before, and receive an error says that Terminal couldn't find the file.

In this case, I've entered the operation, hit return, received the bus error, copy-and-pasted the exact same operation, hit return and it worked, so it doesn't seem like the destination path is wrong.

Thanks for your thoughts.

Well we're all kinda stuck pulling guesses out of our nether regions until you deign to share the exact command line that's bus erroring for you...

Sorry. I didn't realize that would useful.

Code: Select all

./HandBrakeCLI -i "/Volumes/Media Hard Drive/Movie Name/VIDEO_TS/" -o "/Volumes/Media Hard Drive/Movie Name.m4v" -f mp4 -m -e x264 -b 2500 -2 -B 192 -R 44.1

How could that be your exact command line? Didn't you say you were using semi-colons to batch commands together?

I apologize for the lack of clarity in my replies. I'm not sure what information would be relevant. Essentially, the operations are the same thing over and over with only the name of the movie changing:

Code: Select all

./HandBrakeCLI -i "/Volumes/Media Hard Drive/Movie Name 1/VIDEO_TS/" -o "/Volumes/Media Hard Drive/Movie Name 1.m4v" -f mp4 -m -e x264 -b 2500 -2 -B 192 -R 44.1 ; ./HandBrakeCLI -i "/Volumes/Media Hard Drive/Movie Name 2/VIDEO_TS/" -o "/Volumes/Media Hard Drive/Movie Name 2.m4v" -f mp4 -m -e x264 -b 2500 -2 -B 192 -R 44.1 ; ./HandBrakeCLI -i "/Volumes/Media Hard Drive/Movie Name 3/VIDEO_TS/" -o "/Volumes/Media Hard Drive/Movie Name 3.m4v" -f mp4 -m -e x264 -b 2500 -2 -B 192 -R 44.1
Thanks.

Please...just give us the *exact* command line you are entering in that causes the crash. As long as you keep editing them while saying it's "essentially" what you're entering, no one has any way of even knowing if Cav's initial hunch is correct.

I appreciate your patience. Sorry.

Here's what I put in:

Code: Select all

./HandBrakeCLI -i "/Volumes/Media Hard Drive/S01E14 Shock and Aww/VIDEO_TS/" -o "/Volumes/Media Hard Drive/Converted/S01E14 Shock and Aww.m4v" -f mp4 -m -e x264 -b 2500 -2 -B 192 -R 44.1 ; ./HandBrakeCLI -i "/Volumes/Media Hard Drive/S02E01 The One Where Michael Leaves/VIDEO_TS/" -o "/Volumes/Media Hard Drive/Converted/S02E01 The One Where Michael Leaves.m4v" -f mp4 -m -e x264 -b 2500 -2 -B 192 -R 44.1 ; ./HandBrakeCLI -i "/Volumes/Media Hard Drive/S02E02 The One Where They Build a House/VIDEO_TS/" -o "/Volumes/Media Hard Drive/Converted/S02E02 The One Where They Build a House.m4v" -f mp4 -m -e x264 -b 2500 -2 -B 192 -R 44.1 ; ./HandBrakeCLI -i "/Volumes/Media Hard Drive/S02E03 Amigos/VIDEO_TS/" -o "/Volumes/Media Hard Drive/Converted/S02E03 Amigos.m4v" -f mp4 -m -e x264 -b 2500 -2 -B 192 -R 44.1 ; ./HandBrakeCLI -i "/Volumes/Media Hard Drive/S02E04 Good Grief/VIDEO_TS/" -o "/Volumes/Media Hard Drive/Converted/S02E04 Good Grief.m4v" -f mp4 -m -e x264 -b 2500 -2 -B 192 -R 44.1
Here's what comes out:

-o "/Volumes/Media Hard Drive/Converted/S01E14 Shock and Aww.m4v"
1. Does the folder "Converted" exists
2. Take the spaces out of the title of your destination file

Also, I find it hard to believe "Media <space> Hard <space> Drive" is the name of your Volume?!

...Are you on Windows?..I suspect not, so why the quotations?

Yes, it does.
Cavalicious wrote:2. Take the spaces out of the title of your destination file
I'll try it, but I'm not sure why "S01E14 Shock and Aww.m4v" would fail while "S01E01 The One Where Michael Leaves.m4v" and "S02E05 Good Grief.m4v" works.
Cavalicious wrote:Also, I find it hard to believe "Media <space> Hard <space> Drive" is the name of your Volume?!
That is the name of the external drive connected to my Mac Mini.
Cavalicious wrote:...Are you on Windows?..I suspect not, so why the quotations?
I was told by jbrjake in another thread that it would be preferable to using backslashes:

Code: Select all

/Volumes/Media\ Hard\ Drive/S01E14\ Shock\ and\ Aww/VIDEO_TS/ -o /Volumes/Media\ Hard\ Drive/Converted/S01E14\ Shock\ and\ Aww.m4v -f mp4 -m -e x264 -b 2500 -2 -B 192 -R 44.1
Thanks

Yes...this is where I was going. Typically, I have to use a backslash in order to use Spaces.

Here the result of using the backslashes. I entered the command and received a bus error. I pasted the exact same command again and received another bus error. However, when I pasted it a third time, it worked.

Thanks for the more detailed information.

Can you please describe your ripping process? How did you manage to get a separate VIDEO_TS folder for every Arrested Development episode, instead of having several in each?

Also, it'd be helpful if you could repeat what you did in your last post -- with the one that would only encode on the third try -- but attach the -v flag (aka --verbose) to the end of your commands. That would provide a lot more information about exactly what HB was up to when it bus errored.

I created the individual Video_TS files by selecting and ripping each episode using MacTheRipper 3.0 r14d's Main Feature extraction method.

I'll add the -v flag to the next set of files I convert.

Thanks again for the help.

Please use Full Disc Extraction. There is no need to do a folder for each episode. This will make things a little simpler. Then you will only need to used the "-t" option to specify an episode.

Thanks for all your help. Things seem to be ripping fine now. I think the problem might've been with using quotes instead of a backslash.

Unfortunately, I've already ripped all the files to my media drive as individual episodes, and I'm loath to have to re-rip everything.

I finished converting Arrested Development, and now I've moved on to Entourage. I ripped the first episode, using the same operation as before, and it seems to play fine from beginning to end, but both it and the next episode seem to be generating a lot of sync errors. For example:

Code: Select all

Encoding: task 2 of 2, 50.94 % (6.98 fps, avg 6.92 fps, ETA 00h46m16s)[11:11:14] sync: adding 50 ms of silence for track 80bd
[11:11:14] sync: adding 50 ms of silence for track 80bd
Encoding: task 2 of 2, 50.95 % (6.98 fps, avg 6.92 fps, ETA 00h46m16s)[11:11:14] sync: adding 50 ms of silence for track 80bd
[11:11:14] sync: adding 50 ms of silence for track 80bd
Encoding: task 2 of 2, 50.95 % (6.67 fps, avg 6.92 fps, ETA 00h46m14s)[11:11:14] sync: adding 50 ms of silence for track 80bd
[11:11:15] sync: adding 50 ms of silence for track 80bd
This repeats over and over and over hundreds times during the second pass. Processor usage has plummeted by about half (74% vs. 160% typically), and I'd assumed that this meant I was experiencing the sound dropout issue. However, there is sound through the end credits.

Is there a problem that I don't recognize? Thanks again.

Thus, use Full Disc Extraction

I'll use Full Disk Extraction in the future, but I'm curious why it makes a difference? Why would it work fine for Arrested Development but not Entourage? What do the sync messages I'm receiving mean? Thanks.
