11 days. Not a single reply? For the most used video transcoder?

Hello! I am a photographer with a good eye for estetics, who is using some free time to learn 2D illustration, and logo creation. I would like to offer my services!

Actually, there has been some helpful activity in this regard. They just started their own thread so that this one doesn't get cluttered.

Someone with a good eye could critique this to help improve it and maybe offer some ideas about how to rework our iconic pineapple & cocktail icon.

At some point we will also want to have discussions about how we could improve the layout of the various screens. But that's a long discussion that has many technical aspects to it.

Thanks for the link and thanks for the nicer tone around the forum. Hope this will help to attract skilled people (sorry, I'm not one of them).

I would love to contribute to HandBrake, but can't code in anything other than JavaScript.

The only thing I could think to do is help to spruce up the documentation a little, if that's something that would be somehow worthwhile.

The best way to get in touch would be to contact us via IRC, #handbrake on freenode.

My name is Courtny Cotten and I am a UX Design Specialist with Universal Mind:

I'd love to contribute in some way to the project. You can check out my portfolio on Dribbble http://dribbble.com/courtnycotten ~ my specialties are obviously UX & interface design but I'm also adept at icon design & web development.

Let me know if I can be of service. Email works best. [Removed email]

Just an idea for UI

Post by smallangryboy »

There's a lot of talent here, especially with the icon design and UI elements. Just an idea for a radical and minimal approach. Not sure it will find any favour here but thought I'd post.

I'm happy to do UI design for HandBrake, make all the icons and buttons etc. This includes assets for Retina displays (the Retina MacBook Pro).

Some of my work can be seen here: http://dribbble.com/dankando

As a UI and brand expert, I have been unable to use Handbrake in my workflow because it is so very hideous. I am very glad that things are now moving forward! A few of these guys have some great work, so I expect things should work out well.

If you don't have any luck getting the UI, icons etc going.. please contact me.

EDIT: Apparently criticising is not allowed here. Sad really. This software could be very awesome if it were a little more professionally achieved ;)

I registered because I wanted to help. But then I saw the forum thread with the 'updates' you have been working on, and are apparently very happy with. I was disappointedly flabbergasted by what I saw!

PS... Ted, I am sorry I upset you. I really didn't mean for my comments to sound rude... just direct and appropriately critical. PPS, I am also is Brisvegas ;)

Hi!
Have been trying out Handbrake now for just a day or so, and incidentally saw the call for dev help in the Sourceforge newsletter.
Right now I'm trying to transcode videos from my HUMAX PVR and have found that HB can't squirt the subtitles from TS files into MKV files.
Would this be a suitable bit of code for a newbie volunteer to try and sort out? (I'm not an expert in any of the areas involved but I am willing to learn...)

First, please figure out which type of subtitle you're talking about precisely.

Aha... Well, if I understand your question correctly, VLC says that the sample TS file I'm looking at right now contains a stream of type "Subtitle" with codec "DVB subtitles (dvbs)".

My very limited understanding of the situation (obtained via googling a fair bit last night) is that HB can't currently extract the subtitles from the TS file. That's what I was thinking might make a useful enhancement...

That's probably fairly trivial. But you'd also have to leverage libavcodec's decoder before you could do anything with the subtitles.

OK, am already confused. Apologies in advance if this is a lame question, but are there pointers to docs which describe the data flow, and which libraries get used for which bits?
Up until now I had basically imagined that HB was already able to deal with the subtitles once it "had" them in some fashion, and that the only missing piece of the puzzle was a capability to get them out of the TS file. And I'm not sure if that particular missing bit of functionality is best inserted within HB or a library (e.g. avcodec...).

HB has its own TS demuxer. For other containers, we just get the subtitles from avformat's demuxer (fairly trivial).

But yeah, getting the subs is only half the story - you need a parser (for passthrough) and a decoder (for burn-in). And you need to implement muxer support (for passthrough). And you need a decoder in order to convert to another format when direct passthrough is not possible (e.g. MP4 input with TX3G subtitles, MKV output container - subtitles need to be converted to MKV "UTF-8" text subtitles when passing them through). Or MKV UTF-8 -> MP4 TX3G. etc.

Actually, I LIKE the current interface, it's to the point and not a distraction from one's content - suggest (in help files) several "for example" step-by-step set-ups for the most common projects
