Old DVDs still have mastering issues. Run it through DTOX2 as Movie Only (still check for Cells/Duration) and pass that through HB.

I've been having problems with a few DVDs and the latest beta of HandBrake, encoding with x264, anamorphic, and 0.66 quality. I tried ripping with mactheripper (3.0 R14d) using both full extraction and main feature only, and I ran the output through DVD2OneX2 to remove any zero cells, and still didn't have any luck; the audio still dropped out and didn't return. I'm running it on an iMac Core Duo (OS X 10.4.9) with the internal Pioneer DVR-K05 drive.

I decided to try one of the DVDs I'd been having problems with through the CLI. I extracted The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (R2 2-disk retail version) with mactheripper, and put it through the CLI using the same options I was using in the GUI version.

Hey presto, a perfect file with audio!

I was a bit wary during the encoding, as I was getting errors galore, but they don't seem to have affected the final movie. I'm trying another DVD I was having problems with (Alien 3 from the R2 Quadrilogy boxset), so I'll report back if the CLI encodes it with the audio.

The CLI is also a bit faster, which is nice! :)

Sorry if this is redundant information, but I figured someone might find it useful.

***edit***

For anyone who is interested, Alien 3 ripped first time with the CLI using the same settings I was using for the GUI.

MTR metrics

Post by hackcess »

So far I'm having a hit and miss with MTR and DVD's I was having issues with. Of the stack of DVD's that did NOT produce audio I set out to run them through MTR and I am seeing some good results. However, MTR is not the complete answer, for instance, The Incredibles is still silent even after being processed by MTR --> HB.

I think Cava mentioned 2 apps (MTR and ???), what's the second one I should try? Goddamn internet is nothing but text and I hate reading... :P

DVD2one, priced at €39.99 (US$53). You rip your DVDs with MacTheRipper, and then you run them through DVD2one to remove zero cells. This did not work for me, and I even got dropouts on DVDs that didn't have zero cells to begin with. Judging from what I've read so far, I'm wandering if the zero-cells thing isn't a red herring? Has anyone tested the same DVD, once with zero cells, and once without, and shown that the audio consistently drops from the one with zero-cells?

Give the Command Line Interface a try; it's doing the job for me, with no dropouts at all so far.

CLI

Post by hackcess »

Marty, what's your secret sauce for the CLI? By default I went to the GUI to see if it could give me the CLI for my preset. Nothing...

Anyhow, I tried a few options from the docs with failed results. I currently have been building my little media center using anamorphic @ 2500 bitrate and x264. Cava posted something earlier:

./HandBrakeCLI -i /Volumes/Encode/d2ox2/ PIRATESOFTHECARIBBEAN2/  -o /Volumes/New\ Download/ PIRATESOFTHECARIBBEAN2.m4v -T -d  -m -p -2  -e x264 -b 2500 -r 23.976  -E facc  -B 160 -R 44.1 -6 6ch -v -x

The only thing that bugs me in that is the m4v which is what iTunes/iPod like and which I give a rats ass about. Is anything in there specifying anamorphic?

To encode with those settings, you would use:

./HandBrakeCLI -i [path to input file] -o [path to output file] -e x264 -b 2500 -p

The "-p" sets it to anamorphic. Any option you don't specify will be set at the default values. So the line above would give you 128 AAC audio mixed down to Dolby Pro Logic II. If you wanted to set the audio bitrate higher, you would use -B 160, and -m will give you chapter markers.

If you don't want to use the m4v file name, you just give your output file the mp4 extension instead (or you could just rename it afterwards).

There's a beginners guide of sorts to the CLI here.

CLI kinda buggy?

Post by hackcess »

So I tried the magic CLI sauce (I did read that CLI docs page BTW) and the latest Intel build just craps out on me everytime. Here's what it says this time using the following CLI as suggested by Marty:

./HandBrakeCLI -i [path to input file] -o [path to output file] -e x264 -b 2500 -p

CLI working

Thanks Cava, I got so caught up in I didn't even catch that. It seems to be crunching away now so I'll post, again, if it works (processing one of the damned silent movies...)

CLI all the way.

Post by hackcess »

I'd like to thank Cava and Marty for showing me a better way. CLI is definitely the way to go. It just works. Although I was having major problems until I upgraded the mini from 10.4.8 to 10.4.9, no idea if this was actually the issue but the CLI started working really well after that update.

Thanks guys!

Well I've got to say a big thank you to all those above who suggested using the CLI. I'm not sure if there's 2 issues with the same symptoms or if the MacTheRipper and 0 length cells are red herrings but my experiences of the issue point completely to the MacGUI.

I've been having sound drop out issues with Cars, Anchorman, The Terminal, Capote, The Godfather, Training Day, The Producers and Monsters Inc (all region 2). Anchorman worked it's way through successfully after passing through DTOX2, however, that didn't work for any of the others and I've tested some using MacTheRipper 2.6.6 and MTRbeta3, which does remove 0 cells anyway in Main Feature extraction.

I've now successfully encoded them all using the CLI, all went straight through 1st time. Some were ripped with MacTheRipper 2.6.6 and others using MTRbeta3, I played safe with the Sony & Disney discs by using MTRbeta3 for them & using the Main Feature extraction. Because of this I can't say that the 0 cells aren't causing sound drop outs, all I can say is that there was an issue for me that caused sound dropouts irrespective of the ripping process and that this was solved by moving from the MacGUI to using the CLI version.

Hmmm, actually The Producers didn't work, will investigate further, maybe there are a couple of things in play, that one was ripped using MTR 2.6.6 so might be exposing the 0 cell issue.

Five of the Seven movies you listed encodes just fine with the procedure listed in the first post of this thread. I don't have 2 of them, so can't say all Seven, but I suspect they too would be fine when what's listed is followed correctly.

1. If you have MTR 3 then there is no need for MTR 2.
2. Main Feature is not an option to combat No Audio (catalyst maybe).
3. DTOX2 is a Manual process not automatic
4. CLI isn't the answer, but a damn fine weapon.

Works fine at 1000 kbps, but not at anything else.

Post by ceidruns »

I'd like other people who are having problems to try doing a 1000 kbps encode to see if it works for them. Here's my experience:

Movie: Sherlock Holmes in The Scarlet Claw

Ripper: MTR 3.0r14d
Mode: Movie only

Format: MP4 file
FPS: 29.97
Encoder: x264 (h.264 Main)
kbps: 1000, 1100, 1178, 1200 (only 1000 works)
Grayscale: True
2-pass: True
Audio: AAC 128k

These settings work fine with kbps set to 1000. If I change the video bitrate to something else, audio gets dropped. At 1200, 1178, and 1100 kbps, the audio gets dropped. It drops in different places depending on the bitrate. I didn't see and correlation between bitrate and location of audio drop.

Tried putting the video through DTOX Movie only, but it didn't help.

Tried the CLI, but it didn't help.

Also, to reference another post i saw in this thread, Handbrake gets the number of chapters wrong. It thinks there are 12, but DVD Player says there are 13. Other movies I've encoded fine, the number of chapters reported are the same.

First of all, you didn't follow directions...

MTR /w FULL DISK EXTRACTION

This is one of the key steps, as Movie Only can be a catalyst.

Note to all DTOX2 newbies

The idea behind using DTOX2, is to open the Full Disk Extraction, pick the correct Title /w parameters, manually delete any Zero cell/duration bits, and then export to Movie Only.

It's hard to know about this thread and those instructions until you've already had the audio problems and needed to come looking for answers. I'll follow them in the future, now that I know about them. Perhaps a link from the download page is in order.

Thank you for your time and help. It is appreciated.

Audio breaking up with CLI

Post by jdmuys »

Hello,

I tried encoding my DVD - the one which drops audio 100% of the time with the GUI - with the CLI. It gives a bunch of errors from libdvdread. The beginning of the terminal output follows. Errors go on and on.

The error is always the same:

Code: Select all

*** libdvdread: CHECK_VALUE failed in nav_read.c:207 ***
*** for dsi->dsi_gi.zero1 == 0 ***
I don't know much about all this. It all sounds consistent with poor authoring though.

Summary: this is an unprotected DVD, recorded from TV on DVD-R with a Sony living room DVD recorder. The DVD was ripped to my hard disk using MTR (full rip).

Very early in 2nd pass, audio problems start to appear: "trashing late audio" and "sync: adding 50 ms of silence for track".

At the same time, the fps speed drops considerably, from over 30 fps, to under 10 fps.

It keeps adding so many chunks of 50 ms of silence, that I believe it's not worth letting it continue: I am almost sure the resulting file will have no audio.

Yet I did let it go, and as anticipated, it failed, with audio breaking out at the very beginning.

Will that help? I am ready to give a copy of that unprotected DVD.

Cheers,

Jean-Denis

Oh this audio drop out problem is fun.

Wait, I meant frustrating. The following points pertain to the GUI version.

1. I have only ever had the dropout problem when using 2 pass encoding. If I uncheck it, no problem.
2. I have only had the dropout problem when using multi-channel (> 2) audio encoding. If I select the stereo track, audio never drops out.
3. I have found _no difference_ in the audio dropout problem whether encoding directly off the DVD or from an ISO on the hard drive. I don't believe it's a factor.

For what it's worth, this is what I've found.

Points 1, 2 and 3 may be unique to you, as they have ALL produced NoAudio for others.

All of a sudden I'm having problems with every DVD I'm ripping. For the longest time I had rarely any sound drops. I've done 99 movies and hundreds of TV shows so far and up until the other day I ony had the drop twice in all this time. Now suddenly I can't get any working rip at all with any DVD.

I have to do more tests, but this is just strange.

Same thing happened to me. Maybe Apple changed something in a Tiger point release that screwed things up.

I'm trying the CLI right now to rip a movie I just discovered suffered from the drop as well. I ripped it a few days ago but only now got around to watching it. Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country. It dropped out a few seconds after they light the flares for warmth on the snowy prison planet around the start of chapter 10.

So I'm trying this one again with the CLI to see if it makes a difference.

Seems that I'm getting this drop a lot more than I was before. Some movies I've ripped twice or three times with the same drop. All in different places though. It doesn't seem to be a set place for the drop. Always just random.

We'll see in about... 2 hours and 31 minutes. Damn... I'm ripping directly from DVD because I don't feel like ripping it to the HD right now.

This is sad. When I got my new MacBook I figured I'd have the whole library ripped in a week. I didn't expect to be having so many problems.

Make that 2 hours and 34..35 minutes... 36.... no 37.. ugh..

Damn. I decided to cancel the rip at 13% because the time just kept going higher and higher. I'll do it over night. But I played back the finished file and the sound drops out right before Kim Catrall's character says "Captain on the bridge".

*sigh*

New thought...how about you try the outlined procedure in the 1st post of this thread...<just a thought>!

This is really a horrible bug. I've had to go back to the old version of HandBrake. So far, I've had excellent luck with MTR 3.0xxx > old Handbrake.
