Deinterlacing/Decomb Problems

Post by Katzenfan »

When i try to encode "The Sopranos" TV series, Pal DVD, i have problems with deinterlacing artefacts.
I tried "Decomb"="Default" and also "Deinterlaced"="Slower", but the result is the same, i see the artefacts.

Is there another alternative than these decomb and deinterlaced settings? (detelecine will not help, because they are PAL DVDs with 50hz, and not NTSC with 60hz).

Another question: At "Decomb" and "Deinterlace" i can chose "Custom", and obviously enter a parameter manually.

What exactly can be entered there? (i did not found anything in the handbrake guide).

Thank you.

The defaults are pretty good. They are:
7:2:6:9:80:16:16:10:20:20:4:2:50:24:1:-1
These settings aren't as good, but are closer to how the AviSynth Decomb package functions:
7:1:6:20:15:4:8:4:2:50:24:1:-1 (which should emulate its default settings)

Are these settings only for deinterlace or only for decomb (or for both?)

Re: Deinterlacing/Decomb Problems

Post by Katzenfan »

Ok, i guess it is for decomb.

I made some tests with The Sopranos Series:

Decomb default
Decomb fast
Deinterlace fast
Deinterlace slow
Deinterlace slower

Only Deinterlace Fast brings a good result, all other 4 settings have artefacts.

I will try now Decomb 7:1:6:20:15:4:8:4:2:50:24:1:-1 at least, it is now encoding.

If you have a lot of time, you could try the following decomb settings (which are all very slow):

Code: Select all

9:-1

Code: Select all

17:-1

Code: Select all

25:-1
All frames are deinterlaced (-1) using EEDI2 -> yadifmod (9), yadif -> mcdeint (17), EEDI2 -> yadifmod -> mcdeint (25).

I will try that, thank you.

Another question regarding the frame rate:
When ich chose "High Profile" Preset, it is set to "Variable Framerate" and "Same as Source".
As "The Sopranos" is a Pal DVD with 50hz Interlace, wouldn't it be better to set it manually to "Constant Framerate" and "25 Hz"?

It's only necessary if your playback devices don't support variable framerate.

If you want constant framerate you could use "Same as source, Constant Framerate" rather than manually setting it to 25.

Re: Deinterlacing/Decomb Problems

Post by Katzenfan »

My playback devices are all apple devices (iPhone, iPad, ATV), so i guess they support variable framerate.

I checked some of my files (already encoded before with "AppleTV2" Preset) with "Media Tab" Info, for example:

American Beauty Pal DVD:
Framerate mode: Variable
Framerate: 25.000 fps
FrameRate_Minimum/String: 22.568 fps
FrameRate_Maximum/String: 29.970 fps

American Psycho Blu-Ray:
Framerate mode: Variable
Framerate: 23.976 fps
FrameRate_Minimum/String: 23.810 fps
FrameRate_Maximum/String: 29.970 fps

So, does "Framerate_Minimum" and "Framerate_Maximum" mean, that the framerate is not constant? And is that not a problem? (because on the discs there are constant framerates i guess, therefore how is it possible that in the encoded handbrake file there can be variable framerates without a loss of quality and smooth playback? Or do i make a mistake with my thoughts?)

DVDs aren't necessarily 100% constant framerate.
Also, MediaInfo reports framerates in a weird and/or buggy way.

A general question (i just thought about it a little deeper for the first time):

I have a TV Series with 50 frames on DVD (interlaced). Because it is not progressive (like a movie), i can not deinterlace it to 25 frames just by adding every 2 interlaced frames to 1 progressive frame. Therefore normally (at least i think so) i would have to deinterlace it to 50 frames, to keep the smooth playback.

But i can only make max. 29,97 frames out of it, not 50. (when i have a movie, that is no problem, because it was originally filmed with 24 fps and just stored with +4% speedup and 50 frames interlaced on dvd - when it is pal - so i do not loose anything when i deinterlace it back to 25 fps progressive. But when i have a TV series, i have 50 frames - if it is pal - interlaced originally and i will loose frames when i deinterlace it back to 25 frames)

My question is: Is it possible at all, to encode a dvd with a tv series (like described above) and to get also a deinterlaced picture without artefacts but also (!) a smooth playback without jumps and unnatural movement?

At least that would not be a solution for the apple devices, because 50 fps would not working on them. What do you think, how are the tv series in iTunes probably encoded? (at least they should have the same problems. the original material is also interlaced, and must be deinterlaced to 24, 25 or 29,976 fps)

can't wait for a form like yadifmod+NNEDI 2

the implementation of EEDI is so SLOW (more than one can explain why?)

Decomb is and will always be a hit and miss (it's just the way it's designed, hence "Threshold Parameters"

only true guaranteed method is to have de-interlacing fully on each frame, but in this case some form of damage control is needed for the frames that should not of been de-interlaced too be repaired.

the most effective method (yet keeping things simple) is yadifmod + NNEDI 3 (version 3 is locked i believe from use by others, but NNEDI 2 can be used now, although not as fast as version 3 because doesn't have version 3 latest optimization for latest CPU's, but even version 2 is still a lot faster than EEDI 1..... a lot faster)
nnedi2 is an intra-field only de-interlacer. It takes in a frame, throws away one field, and then interpolates the missing pixels using only information from the kept field. It has same rate and double rate modes, and works with YV12, YUY2, and RGB24 input. nnedi2 is also very good for enlarging images by powers of 2, and includes a function 'nnedi2_rpow2' for that purpose.
be nice to have a more up-to-date de-interlacer system in Handbrake, Decomb works well, WHEN it works, but it also fails quite badly at times, and yet it can be difficult to know that it has actually failed on the output, for example 1990's scifi TV shows, not easy to see but if you look carefully you can see where Decomb has missed areas of a frame. (look for interlaced fields in Eye's when there blinking, not there every frame, but easy to find as long as you know what your looking for, small badges that are on chests that are moving across the screen can also show interlace fielding on them)

The best handbrake de-interlacer has by default is "yadif", other variants in custom are extremely slow, and a lot of them are also quite old methods. but the ones that are good are EXTREMELY CPU hungry, far more than they should be (based on observations in programs like MeGUI, Xvid4PSP), although this may be because of AviSynth which is used in them programs, but nor sure?

my advise really (assuming you don't have a 12core+ CPU minimum) is to use MeGUI and add your own coustom AviSynth script to it (very easy as MeGUI has a AviSynth creator, and doom9 can really help on this), the result in MeGUI for deinterlacing can be very impressive, and also quite fast.

A small example that i use in MeGUI

Code: Select all

SetMemoryMax(512)
SetMTMode(5,3)
<input>
SetMTMode(2)
LoadPlugin("D:\Program Files (x86)\MeGUI\tools\yadifmod.dll")
LoadPlugin("D:\Program Files (x86)\MeGUI\tools\nnedi3.dll")
YadifMod(order=-1, edeint=nnedi3(field=-1))
<crop>
#resize
#denoise

works really well, and very CPU efficient when utilized with AviSynth MT version and setting MT mode for filters!

yadifmod + nnedi3 just put them in location of (well you can see above where i put them)

yadifmod does deinterlacing, nnedi3 repairs the damage that yadifmod has done (this is very simply put, it's a bit more complicated than that, but in simple terms, this will do)

I'd be interested in seeing some samples of problematic content. I've converted hundreds of TV episodes from either PAL DVDs or PAL DVB (digital TV) recordings and so far I haven't had any issues with either combing or stuttering playback. I've always just used the decomb defaults.

any of the startrek's (DS9, TNG, and Voyager) also Stargate SG1.....

look at the eye's, blinking really shows it.....

it seems to be shows from the 90's that use strange forms of interlacing combined with the way editing was done back then (scifi TV shows from the 90's are highly problematic)

viewtopic.php?f=11&t=20863

as you will see from the above thread, i was shutdown, so the matter never really got resolved, even after reading it again, I still feel even now that he was quite rude.....

i think the general gist was..... "Oh dear, how sad, never mind"

PS, i continued for quite sometime after that thread finished...... but then i realized..... Decomb is acting in a way that can be described as "hit and miss"...... with that in mind i realized that if even one frame was missed, or flagged as a "blend" when it should of been "deinterlaced" is by it's own merit no good too me.... i need something that won't miss a thing (otherwise i would have to painstakingly check every project i do), if 100% accuracy in deinterlacing is required (meaning no frames get missed), then Decomb is not the recommended choice.... by it's own nature Decomb can never be 100% because it's based on "parameters/thresholds"

for the record, when it works, it works well...... but like i have tried to explain.... it is possible that it can miss a frame(s).

i would like to add one last note, if the picture is clear (like more recent shows that are digital), then Decomb works really well, my results seem to point at shows that are filmed on analogue video (as was the case back in the 90's), and also Scifi show also seem to be a big culprit from that era.

Strange Interlacing + grainy frames = Decomb stumbles here and there.

I installed MeGUI now and spent the last 2 hours of trying, reading and searching, but to be honest, i just don't understand anything. It begins that i can only import a single *.vob file of my video_ts folder (and then have to chose between a "one click encoder" or a "file indexer", no clue what the last thing is meaning), and i did not find any settings for deinterlacing at least. I also found just one preset called "scratchpad". Maybe for professionals MeGUI may be the perfect tool, but i am just a beginner compared to that. I also did not find any useful guide (also not on doom9). Very frustrating at all :-(

I tried 25:-1 first, but my notebook (Intel U7300 1.30GHz, 3GB RAM) won't make it. After 24 hours it showed 13% progress, 000,0 fps (not even 000,1). So for encoding the complete first 60 minute episode it would need more than a week or so.
I try now 9:-1, and at the moment (after 15 minutes of encoding) it shows about 24 hours time remaining (Avg fps 001,0), so i will give it a try.

If you are interested in exploring the more precise deinterlace tools (at the obvious expense of time). Nick's research using QTGMC in AviSynth is worth a good read here http://www.bubblevision.com/underwater- ... -Vimeo.htm as well as on the Doom9 forum.

I don't want to get told off, I'm going to post just two links off MeGUI guide, and I'm not going to get into any discussion about MeGUI on this forum, as that was not my intention, Doom9 well covers MeGUI all ready (and thensome), i posted just an example i used to illistrate how simple using NNEDI 3 was to utilize, in high hopes that handbrake could port over NNEDI 2 in the future (although assuming they do it in a way where the performance and efficiency is kept..... after all NNEDI 2 is pretty fast.)

Reduces FPS on most projects about 15-25% (depending on type of deinterlacing and the picture quality..... grain on frames does have an impact.)

"The rewards outdo the efforts"

i too was surprised how long the other modes took too, which again is why i posted my post, Handbrake needs another deinterlacer that is great but realistically usable by people with only 4 Core CPU's LOL, it already has yadif, now it just needs NNEDI 2.... although Handbrake doesn't use AviSynth..... so NNEDI 2 would have to be ported over.

still not a massive biggy, MeGUI does a wonderful job (or people that wish to have a more streamlined interface could go for Xvid4PSP)

Xvid4PSP = QTGMC ( ) look it up "QTGMC"

Which is faster, NNEDI 2 or NNEDI 3? It seems like the source code for both is available under the GPL.

nnedi3 =
nnedi2 with improved predictor neural network architecture and local neighbourhood pre-processing. nnedi3 also has multiple local neighbourhood size options to better handle image enlargement vs deinterlacing and give more quality vs speed options.
but NNEDI3 can't work alone (well it's not recommeded if used for deinterlacing), it needs yadifmod or something similar
Modified version of Fizick's avisynth filter port of yadif from mplayer. This version doesn't internally generate spatial predictions, but takes them from an external clip. It also is not an Avisynth_C plugin (just a normal one). This version works with YV12 and YUY2 colorspaces.
