Problem synching / transferring videos to iPod

Post by Plankierkaarter »

I am experiencing problems when I try to transfer videos to my iPod video. I am using the latest version of Handbrake, and I use the iPod output presets . The video's are ripped allright, and I can see them in iTunes, even play them in iTunes and Quicktime, but when I sync my iPod, iTunes tells me that the video wasn't transferred to my iPod because the "video structure is not supported by my iPod"?? The file is a .M4V file which is the standard output when you select the iPod presets... Average bitrate is 1500 kbps
This is very strange because this used to work fine in the past, and I did not install another version of Handbrake...
I have tried re-installing Handbrake and even using an old ersion but nothing helps... This is really driving me nuts!! Can anyone help? Has anyone experienced the same problem?
I am working on a Mac OSX 10.4...

try checking your resolution - if you're ripping it to the native resolution (probably 720x480) you won't be able to play them on your ipod. they will, however play on iTunes and @TV.

Which resolution would you recommend?

The iPod can't handle greater than 640px wide or 480px deep - or at least, iTunes won't let you transfer them :)

if you're just going to watch them on your ipod, 320x240 should do just fine. if you want to hook it up to a tv, you might want to go up to 480x360.

hawkman - what resolution have you been able to play on your ipod? i tried to transfer my videos at 720x480 (2000kbps) using floola, but i wasn't able to play the files on the ipod.

thanks.

So what exactly did you end up doing to get them to transfer? My IT guy at work said not to rip them at anything less than 640 wide so that they will still be decent files for the future.

I have gotten my new files to work, but only if I change my codec to

MPEG-4 Video / AAC Audio

anyone else have any thoughts?

I've tried using the macroblocks rule (as with MPEG-4 video) and it's worked for me in the past, using floola. ie:

640/16 = 40
480/16 = 30

40*30 = 1200 macroblocks.

So, any video under 1200 macroblocks works for me (using floola instead of iTunes, of course). For instance, 720*304 (2.35:1 widescreen) would be 45*19=855 macroblocks, and should play. 720*480 gives 45*30=1350 macroblocks, too many.

I'm using an upgraded 5G iPod, not the 5.5G; so I don't know if they behave the same.

I am new to using handbrake. I save different versions from the settings listed here in this forum and nothing opens in my itunes software and when iItry to open on the iPod (drag movie into iPod) it says file is not compatible. All the ripped files play in the preview screen and in qucktime - just not in itunes. Any suggestions?

I'm kinda growing tired of saying this to people: we cannot read your mind, so we do not know what settings you've used; and without knowing what settings you've used, we cannot tell you what's going wrong. Some common guesses include that you've set the resolution too high (wider than 640px or taller than 480px) or that you're using the H.264 Main encoder instead of the H.264 iPod variant, but it could be myriad other things.

There are lots of posts on this forum telling you which settings the iPod will handle. There's also a preset in HandBrake itself. I suggest you do a little research.

It wouldn't be in the sticky - I don't even know if that'll work for everyone, but it does seem to work for me :)

HB-iPod Setting

Post by jbelkin »

Shouldn't the HB-Ipod take guesswork out?

I noticed a rip use HB-IPOD was anamorphic so of course, too large for the ipod.

Was it here on a forum I read here there were optimal settings embedded when you choose one of HB's preset settings so I shouldn't fuss with them?

but bottom line - whatever else, 640 is the max?

Yes, 640*480 is the maximum iTunes will transfer to the iPod, which is why the preset uses these guidelines.

HB 08.5b1

Post by jbelkin »

Using HB Mac 0.8.5b1, on the DVD I have in my Mac right now, SOURCE 720 by 480.

When I select HB-iPod, it reads OUTPUT 720 x 480.

It does change if I select HB-PS3 and HB-AppleTV so I know it's not something I'm doing.

I don't think I did a SAVE AS and wrote over the HB pre-sets since all the tiny text indicating all the specialized settings pop up underneath "Encoder" is still all there ...

So, are you saying I somehow changed the settings or is something awry?

Is anyone having problems with iTunes 7.3?
Part of my collection of videos which did transfer to my iPod with 7.2 are now failing to transfer.
Certain files (which IIRC were transcoded using identical settings) transfer while others don't.
Anyone having similar problems?
(my settings are x264 (h.264 iPod), 2-pass encoding, 700kbs, 640x368. AR on, Deinterlace on, Anamorphic Off.

Yes, I am running into that too. I encoded two videos and one will transfer and one will not. V1 is anamorphic and transfers fine. V2 and V3 are actually the same video, one anamorphic and the other not. I don't want to set the size smaller, because I also will watch them on the laptop.

iTunes 7.3
Handbrake 0.8.5b1
Settings: MP4/AAC, 2 pass, 500kbps, Deinterlace off, Track 1: AC3 5.1, Mix: Dolby Pro Logic II

V1: Src 720x480, Out 720x360, AnOut 853x360
V2: Src 720x480, Out 720x468, AnOut 850x468
V3: Src 720x480, Out 720x304, Keep AR

Anamorphic won't let you change the size so what is above is what it sets.

Your "Out" is your container size and will restrict what the iPod can take, as of iTunes 7.3 the 640 width hard limit was removed for mp4, so you can in fact, transfer 720 x xxx mp4 to your iPod again. However, I believe that the macroblock limit is still enforced. Your V2 is 720 x 468 container size, which if I am not mistaken is over the mp4 macroblock limit for the iPod.

Thats my guess anyway. Personally, I do alot of iPod encoding and do not think that anamorphic is the way to go for the iPod. But, thats just my .02 :)

For that matter, I still contend that a properly encoded h.264 vid at 640 x xxx looks better than the same vid done in mp4 at 720 x xxx. Both on the ATV and the iPod.

Re: Problem synching / transferring videos to iPod

Post by hawkyn »

Sorry, I still cannot get videos to synch to my iPod. I have tried to read all the pertinent forum posts and have not found a solution. I apologize if I missed something. I am using:

Handbrake 0.9.2
1.5 GHz Powerbook G4
Mac OS 10.5.3
iTunes 7.6.2
5G iPod

I used the iPod presets. I did not change anything. Well, the first few times, I lowered the resolution, but if I understand what is being said above, this should not have been a problem. The output falls within the resolution parameters for iPod in all cases, whether I changed it or not. The iPod Atom appears to be added.

I can get the files transferred if, after I rip them, I run them through the iTunes converter or iSquint, but this takes an awfully long time and I never had to do it with earlier versions of HB.

Re: Problem synching / transferring videos to iPod

...right from the documentation...
The Presets article wrote:Built-In Presets

HandBrake's Built-In Presets are automatically created when you download HandBrake and run it for the first time. Alternately, if you have been running a previous version of HandBrake with presets, you will need to tell HandBrake to update the built in presets. The Built-In Presets are listed at the top of the drawer and are blue. The Built-In presets are there to simply allow you to encode with one click. There is much information about Built-In presets available.

Updating Built-In Presets

You can access this command from the main Presets menu or the Presets drawer (in the action menu at the bottom). This command will delete any existing Built-In Presets and programmatically recreate them for you. It is highly recommended that you do this after any HandBrake update, as it is very likely that any newer version of HandBrake will include new Built-In Presets for you to use.

You changed something, because you're encoding with CABAC. iPod supports only CAVLC.
