I would just like to point out, that I think its been more of a Software upgrade here. Yes the ATV3 puts out 1080p, but I have found that the ATV2 plays them just fine too.

I've encoded 10 films now on the High Profile settings using the latest Nightly Builds, and they have all run fine on my ATV2, no stuttering and buffering really well via Wi-Fi! Even Jurassic Park, which is the grainiest film I have seen in a long time, with a file size of just under 17gb! And they look amazing!

Average file size has been between 3-6gb's. Anything not shot digitally is a little more 8-16gb.

Obioban wrote:So, I encoded a couple of files using "High" today. The results look beautiful, but the files are HUGE!

I was fooling with "dodgeball", starting with a BD rip.

"High" left alone made a 9.88 gb file
"High" with "large file size" unchecked made a 8.55 gb file
Drop it to 720p and I get a 1.87 gb file.

Now... most iTMS 1080p files are ~3gb, or ~25-30% larger than their 720p brethren. I'm fully aware that the quality of the file isn't quite as good as what I've created. That said... I can't see the difference, at least on my 60" LG with my eyes.

9.88 isn't crushing by itself, but I'm trying to build a digital movie library. I have ~450 BDs, so that's 4.5 tb right off the bat-- and that's a LOT of space!

Is there any way to get our 1080p files closer to the size of apples (~3gb per movie) without totally giving up on quality? I certainly don't want to encode them in such a manner that I regret it down the road.... but the current settings just take too much space :(
A file over 4gb in size needs large file size checked, otherwise you have a broken file. Just leave it checked, it will not change the file size if the result is under 4gb.

Try increasing the ref and B frames to 4 and increasing the CQ RF value to 21. This will increase your compression and lower the overall bitrate. See if you like the results (I use a custom preset close to this).

When comparing to Apple's 1080p files are you comparing the same movie? I have BR rips using the same settings that range from under 2gb to almost 11gb depending on the source. I would only compare the same movie otherwise it means nothing.

Hi,

Can you advise on the exact settings within the High Profile setting that I can use to convert my BDs to copy onto the new iPad as I used strict anamorphic and although it encoded successfully and created an 8gb file it would not allow me to import into iTunes, i have pasted the activity log as requested below, please advise:-

What video size settings are people using for Blurays? I've always set anamorphic to "none" and manually set all cropping to 0 and the resolution to 1920x1080 (keep aspect ratio ticked). It usually tries to make it 1920x1088 but I simply change that to 1080.

Is this the ideal setting for a bluray?

I cannot see the benefit of anamorphic apart from space saving? Aren't Bluray's supposed to be stored as 1920x1080?

Surely anamorphic should be set to "none" for Blurays with the 0 cropping and the resolution set to 1920x1080?

Ah, I misunderstood the purpose of the "large file size" checkbox.

Okay, trying again this am with a movie I have on BD and the ITMS stocks in HD:
Battle royale:
ITMS 720p: 3.9gb
ITMS 1080p: 4.5gb
handbrake high: 10.2 gb

The ITMS 1080p files are good enough that I can't tell the difference between them and the bluray originals on my 60" LG. I would really like to replicate exactly whatever it is that they're doing, especially as their file sizes are so damn reasonable. (not trying to say the quality is the same, just that it's close enough that I can't tell the difference)

I'll try a couple conversions with the settings you suggest above. Here's hoping!

As mentioned by HB dev, thats not going to be possible. Apple/Studios uses the master source content. We on the other hand are already using compressed source material. Such as DVD and BR.

For the New iPad
  • iPad - Up to 720p. This preset will still work great on the new iPad. It will produce up to 720p content and keep filesizes down and thus is more suited for the limited space on this device.
  • High Profile - Up to 1080p. It'll take a long time to encode, but that is the trade off you need to make to keep file sizes in check for the limited space of the iPad.
For the AppleTV3
  • Normal - Up to 1080p. This preset is much faster than High Profile, but can produce larger file sizes. This may cause problems for weak wireless connected devices. Quality may be slightly less than High Profile
  • High Profile - Up to 1080p. Encodes will take a long time, but the quality is excellent and filesizes will be more reasonable than the Normal preset.
I can't find the Presets ... Where can I download them?

They're built-in.

I understand we can't get their source material, but don't see any reason why we shouldn't be able to use the same compression algorithm as them on the source material that we do have. The quality wouldn't be quiet as good (though I doubt we'd be able to notice the difference), but the file sizes should end up the same.

Set anamorphic to strict and leave the cropping on auto. While BRs are not anamorphic setting it to strict ensures the proper resolution is used and no scaling is inadvertently done (it will not make your file anamorphic, it will simply set the flag for it). You want to crop out the black bars otherwise you are encoding them into the movie and wasting space.

On movies like The Dark Knight, Tron 2, and Transformers 1&2 the aspect ration changes at different points. For these movies manually set the cropping to 0.

So what's the difference between that and just setting anamorphic to "none"? Surely there's no point using strict when you don't want anamorphic at all?

I'd rather always leave cropping at 0 and not have to guess which films need it or not!

In regards to Anamorphic, take a look at the HB guide with Anamorphic enabled encoding. Makes so much sense after this. :D

Using Strict is an easy way to make sure the input is never scaled. Depending on what you do, anamorphic None could result in (sometimes accidentally) downscaled or even upscaled output.

Though if you set cropping to custom 0/0/0/0 and modulus to 8 or lower and set "Use picture settings" to "Source maximum" when saving your preset, then the output will not be scaled unless you manually change picture settings.

I apologize if this has been covered already, but I want to make sure I have the correct info. I currently have an original iPad, iPhone 4, and Apple TV 2. I have been using the Apple TV 2 preset for BD Rips and the files play on all my devices (and I'm happy with the quality).

Now that 1080p is a reality with the new iPad and Apple TV 3 (which I plan on buying some time in the future) I'd like to start encoding my files for 1080p. I see the best way to do so is using either the High Profile or Normal presets. However, by doing so, will I still be able to load and play these files on my original iPad and iPhone 4 (without jailbreaking)? I know the Apple TV 2 can play the files and output them at 720p, but I'm more concerned with the fact that I won't be able to view these files on my current iPad and iPhone.

Hmmm, just tried encoding a film using strict with zero cropping and it's come out identical to when I used none and zero cropping.

There appears to be no difference between strict and none if you ensure the resolution is set to 1920x1080 and cropping is set to 0??

Guys, First point fantastic work, your knowledge of this stuff just blows me away and made my movie watching such a joy.

I have spent the last 8 hours processing my first 1080p BR rip the movie Warrior for my ATV3. My source MKV file was 21GB which resulted in a 10.8GB HB file. I have used the following settings: High Profile, 1920x1080, Anamorphic None, No Cropping, CQ RF 21, REF 4, B Frames 4, No Decombe, No Detelecine based on all the bits of info I have pulled from these posts. Everything looks great, picture quality is great.

Once I have generated my HB file, I updated it with Subler adding the HD flag to the metadata. If I now open this file in iTunes and look at the summary info for the file it tells me the Video Quality is High Def (720p), the video dimensions are 1920x1080.

Why is iTunes not seeing this as a 1080p video file, am I doing something wrong? Am I using the right settings, should I be leaving cropping to auto to help reduce the file size by not encoding letter boxing?

Thanks
Pemberto

I used the High Profile preset to encode a handful of Bluray rips and I'm very pleased with the results. Now I'm thinking of encoding DVDs using the High Profile preset and seeing how those results are. Anyone try this yet? I'm just curious if it's worth using instead of just the regular AppleTV 2 preset.

oh, this is for playing back on my Apple TV 3

I had this big, detailed post typed up about how I'm experiencing issues using custom cropping 0/0/0/0 and no anamorphic on a 1:1 1080 transfer. Artifacts appearing in the same spot no matter how I encode. If I go with the default settings (anamorphic loose or strict, auto cropping) there's no issue (output 1920x816).

The whole thing smelled fishy to me (all from the same source file) so on a whim I played back the affected scene with VLC instead of Quicktime and the artifacts were gone. Watch both on the ATV (with anamorphic + cropping and no anamorphic no cropping) and they look identical. Except one is 69% smaller in size.

Short version: QT X doesn't appear to like it when you give it a 1920x1080 transfer without the anamorphic atom flag set (?) and introduces repeatable noise just for fun?

One item I don't understand for those who want zero cropping is that you're essentially encoding the letterbox data into your file. A 15 min 1080 encode (CQ RF 20) of a section of Tron yields 1.73 GB without cropping versus 1.02GB with. That's a 69% larger file for no reason. What am I forgetting/missing?

Where are you seeing this, specifically? Get Info? Historically iTunes and the ATV would flag any content that was 1280x[x] as "HD." Some files, not at all; you had to add an HD flag via a program like Subler for iTunes/ATV to mark it as such.

Use the Picture Settings icon on the toolbar or Window / Picture Settings.

It'll playback just fine but don't try to scale to 1920x1080 or even 1280x720; Handbrake can't add detail that isn't there. Your output will be only as good as your source (DVDs being 720x480). The High Profile preset looks ahead at more b frames for better output quality at the expense of encode time. It also has the detelecine and decomb filters on, recommended to leave on, IMO.

Reading through this has definitely given me some great info. I've been re-ripping my Blu-Ray collection and storing them as MKV's waiting for more conversion setting info for the ATV3.

I (like most others) want the best qualify I can get from my Blu-rays with the most reasonable file size, and what the heck as short a conversion time as possible without sacrificing quality or file size. That being said, I'm going to feed back what I think I've gathered from everyone's posts, and invite you to please clarify if I'm wrong on any of these points. I appreciate the clarification!

Basically it sounds like High Profile is the way to go, with Loose on Anamorphic (because strict may sacrifice file size a bit if the dimensions don't divide by 16 or some such, right?), and cropping on auto so you don't have wasted space from encoded letterboxing. Turn Detelecine and Decomb off, as they're unnecessary for Blu-rays and only lengthen encode time... Leave video alone (RF 20 is fine--to me any extra bump lower would be sacrificing too much file size).

My main question now is audio. If my source (which I thought I had carefully selected only the master audio file for each of my Blu-rays) shows 2 audio tracks, one faac with a Dolby Pro Logic mix down, and one ffmpeg with "None" under mixdown, is this creating 2 audio tracks for my .m4v, wasting space? Should I delete one of these? I'm trying to keep my file sizes as reasonable as possible because my network blows and the less buffer time I need for a huge movie like this the better.

Thanks in advance for verifying the video information and clarifying the audio info!

Still been playing around with various settings to try to find something I like. I put it on VBR with an average bit rate of 3000 and two pass encoding turned on, and I kind of feel like it looks better than high. It looks like the sharpness is maintained but the graininess is somehow removed....?

File size of 2.7 gb, much better! High on the left, VBR based on high at 3000 on the right, both are blown up to about double the size of their normal res.
