NO AUDIO?... Read Here! (Summary in First Post) **UPDATED**

I have ripped about 100 movies with handbrake and wanted to point out my observations concerning this problem:

I suspect this problem may be influenced by the amount of "work" the computer has to do when encoding movies. For example, I usually notice this problem when using the H.264 encoder. If I drop back to the standard encoder or lower the average bitrate, I can usually get the audio for the entire movie.

I have 2 seperate videos of "The Matrix" and both copies drop audio at the exact same scene: The opening scene where the girls jumps in the air when the 2 cops try to arrest her. The gunfire in this scene starts to distort then the audio drops out completely. I believe this happens at 3 min 30 seconds into the movie.

I realize this problem is very difficult to pipoint but it would be very useful if in the next version of HandBrake there is a way to detect the dropping of audio and optionally abort the rip (with failure message). This would save a lot of time.

As I mentioned before, I usually just lower the bitrate and / or change to the standard MPEG encoder and I can usually get through most movies.

I am using a new iMac with the Dual Core intel processor.

not sure how relevant this all is, but I ripped two dvds (The Man with the Golden Gun and Spirited Away) using the latest non-beta MTR to an external drive. I encoded Spirited Away fine on my old powerbook G4 using the latest handbrake, but left the dvd folder on the drive. I just got a brand new macbook, and decided I wanted to do a higher quality encode, and I encountered this problem. Basically the only variable that changed was the computer. I also had the problem when I tried to encode Man with the golden gun on the new macbook (though I've encoded some other dvds no problem using mtr/hb on the new macbook.) And I doubt there was a dvd mastering problem with that dvd, since all the other bond movies in that box set ripped/encoded no problem. To sum up, I'm confused.

For me, I've narrowed it down to either my Intel iMac's DVD drive or Mactheripper. Any encoding that was unsuccessful on my iMac, was successful on my AMD Windows XP machine using Handbrake.

although what you say is true, you are not looking deep enough. when you encode on windows, you are using the windows version of handbrake, which is true CLI, it appears to be a GUI application, but the GUI is nothing more then a front end that creates a CLI string in the background and calls the CLI.

so the only theory that you have solidified even more, is that the is that the problem only occurs in the real OSX GUI APP, if you use the CLI in OSX i can promise you you will see the same results as you do in windows

i have only ever seen 1 report that there was an audio drop in CLI mode encoding, but im not even sure of the source and could have been a false report. i have not yet been able to reproduce the audio drop phenomenon in CLI.

good troubleshooting! keep at it.

There have been other reports of CLI dropping audio. I only use CLI and have had the issue multiple times. Although I've worked around it, it still happens.

In the interest of helping the developers with more info, here is the situation I encountered:

Try 1 - 0.8.5b1 with HB-AppleTV preset (the only change I made was to add 2-pass encoding). Audio dropped out at 41:15

Try 2 - 0.8.5b1 with default settings (FFmpeg and single pass). Discernable blip in the audio at 41:15, but good otherwise

Try 3 - 0.8.5b1 with HB-AppleTV preset, then codec changed back to MPEG-4 Video / AAC Audio (FFmpeg) and 2-pass encoding. Discernable blip in the audio at 41:15, but good otherwise

Environment:
MBP C2D 10.4.9
LG HL-DT-ST DVDRW GWA4080MA
"The Pursuit of Happiness" DVD
Main Feature Extraction from MTR3.0b14

I am currently trying the same VIDEO_TS in 0.7.1
Try 4 - 0.7.1 with AVC/H.264 Video / AAC Audio (x264), Average 1500kbps, 2-pass

I will update with my results tomorrow.

I understand that some people are recommending a full disc extraction from MTR. I am willing to re-rip the DVD and/or try any other tests the developers might find useful.

At the risk of posting ignorant and unnecessary information, here's my experience.

Using 0.8.5b1...

My G4 Dual 1.0ghz 1.25GB Memory seems to be able to rip everything so far with audio included, even problematic Pixar and Disney titles (about 12 so far). The only exception to this has been Snow White. After several unsuccessful attempts with the audio dropping about 25% of the way through, I turned off the new "Create chapter markers" feature and got full audio through to the end.

My MacBook Core Duo 2.0ghz 512MB Memory can rip short videos and cartoons with audio intact (about 400 so far), but full length features drop the audio part way through every time. I haven't tried turning off "Create chapter markers" on this computer yet. The only time I have had a problem with short cartoons dropping audio has been while using "Grayscale encoding", though this only happened on one disc out of two I used it on after making several attempts.

I hope this info is helpful in some way to the powers that be.

I'll be goddamned. I unchecked "create chapter markers", and the Incredibles ripped without dropping a second of audio! Thanks for the tip! I wonder why that affects the sound issue at all?

thats good news, but, to be honest with you, in order for any theory to hold water, you need to duplicate the failure as well as the success a minimum of 3 times each.

the issue has been reported to be intermittent. same exact settings will yield different results. if you want to help us out even more, replicate the failure with chapters ON and the success with chapters OFF and all other variables the same at least a few times more each.

Disc- Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, season 2 vol 2
( i would've taken better notes on all this if I'd known it was ongoing issue when I first started with the problem)

First attempt:
Ripped all episodes using HB-AppleTV preset, disc was in Samsung drive.
All eps had audio dropout, all at various points from 3 min to around 42 mins.

2nd Attempt:
Ripped again with HB-AppleTV preset, disc was in [Censored] internal drive
All eps had audio dropout, again at various points, however each episode dropped in a different place than it did the first time.

3rd attempt:
Full disc extraction with MTR
Loaded directory into HB using AppleTV preset
Same results with audio dropout, again at various points, different from the last attempt.

4th attempt:
Title only rip with MTR
Loaded into FFMPEGX
settings in ffmpegx:
video codec- h.264
video bitrate - 2500kbit/s
video size - 640x480, 4:3, NTSC 29.97
Audio codec: AAC
audio: 128kbit/s, 48000 Hz
Use CABAC checked
Constant Bitrate checked
i4x4 analysis checked
Decode with Quicktime UNChecked
Encoding profile: iPod

Got a successful copy of the test episode, with audio working perfectly.

5th Attempt:
Direct DVD rip of title 3 in HB
HB-AppleTV preset loaded, then unchecked "Create chapter marks"

Your theory is unsound and was pure luck. I have tried several times to encode The Incredibles, Monsters Inc, Pirates of the Carredbean II with zero luck (interestingly these are all Disney productions...).

I've tried with a number of settings and yesterday I suffered through testing your theory that unchecking chapter markers would work. It did not. I still have no audio on Pirates (gotta be irony in that somewhere...).

Anyhow, there are crakles of audio in the very first 30 seconds of all these silent films which give me the impression that Handbrake is not picking up the right track.

I say that because so far my track record with Handbrake is really good and the silent DVD's have all been tested (painfully) at least 4 times each ad have CONSISTENTLY been silent. I need to test these on another machine using handbrake which won't prove much since they play just fine on all three Macs. I fail to see why it would play on all machines but not burn if the brand of the DVD is from a particular manufacturer, but I'll try.

Still failed again on the audio, lost the audio at 4:47 when it transitioned from scene to the opening credits of the show.

encoded the rest of the disc with ffmpegx and it worked perfectly, so it's definately something in handbrake which is causing the issue.

No, just don't look at it. No, just don't scan through it. But read the damn post. I was already being generous buy trying to come up with a way you could get the information you need, without having to go through all 20+ pages. By gathering the "gist" of said thread to one Post. But some of you can't utilize even that. There are some members like dro (and a couple of others) who followed instructions. And guess what?! Thats right, they have had successful encodes.

In the summary, you will find things like:

Description of issue
Symptoms of issue
Some causes of issue
Work-a-Rounds for issue
Statement asking not to post about how you got no audio with xyz setting (9 times out of 10 its been reported already)
...etc.

Its one thing to try what has been recommended and still have issues, those are the members who deserve help. But to post over and over again crap that has already been discussed is just INSANE!

You wonder why not one developer has responded to any of your posts!

Maybe if we start giving out free toasters to those who follow instructions...No, because awarding people to due the bare minimal is a practice that shouldn't be implemented.

i feel that any report from a user is valuable and should be paid attention to, granted some don't make sense and everyone should follow a format in reporting, specially for this monster problem. the bottom line is, a DVD can be ripped, and will drop audio in handbrake, then encoded in another application with no audio drops.

honestly, if the exact same VIDEO_TS folder, ripped however it might have been ripped, works in all other encoders except for handbrake. why should we not search for a solution internal to handbrake?

why should we have to use external apps like DVD2ONEX?

the solution lays within handbrake. WORKARROUNDS are nice to get people on the go and let them work... but a real SOLUTION should be the ultimate goal.

i only speak out of respect for handbrake, i find it takes away from its credibility to try and blame ripping process and external factors such as DVD authoring. these are commercial DVDs, other DVD encoders can handle them without dropping audio, handbrake kicks major ass and should be able to do the same !

50% correct. Most who post in this thread has had "experiences with dropped audio", nothing new. Yes, we know it happens. So posts that state, "Hey, I did this and Audio dropped out" are useless. Now if they did something totally different than what has already been posted, sure post it. But, at this point data collecting on when it happens is over for the most part.

That being said, it will be more helpful to post "Hey, I got DVD abc to encode by doing this..." Or even, "I tried the procedure in the 1st post, but am having some issues." But, because you and some others think HB should "fix" the issue, this is hard for you to accept.

Lets break this down:

1. Use MTR (~30min) - Damn near mandatory step. Why? Because HB will not keep current with any protection schemes!

2. DTOX2 (less than 10min) - kills multiple birds with one Stone.

3. HB (varies) - Get a perfect encode with the features you want!

For the exact reasons you list (don't make sense, convoluted, etc.) is why not all posts are valuable or paid attention to.

Your logic really breaks down here. I use the word "Work-a-round", because I know some of you are very sensitive to the word "Solution." The fact of the matter is, a Work-a-Round is only that, if a known "Solution" is forthcoming. So, for all case a purposes, this is your Solution. You're just not happy with it.

Example? MTR is not a Work-a-Round for protected DVDs...It is your SOLUTION!

Its called "Calling a Spade, a Spade." It only adds to the credibility for one to not only state where the problem could be coming from, but also explain ones opinion on the matter. You don't have to accept it. Speaking of which, I do believe a few pages back, you stated that you have 'moved on' because HB doesn't cut it for you. That you have found another solution to your problem. But yet, we see you post. Why do you care? Is your "other" solution not giving you all you need?

Speaking of that...(features)...if the Developers want to combat this issue within HB, fine. Its not mandatory. I say this because, if "fixing" this means less quality, less Features, etc. (like other encoders...(reason why you're still here)) then let it be. Running though external software for 5min isn't going to kill anyone.

The real problem is, you want EVERYTHING for free...and well, you know the saying for that.

The only Blame has been to those that Master the template DVDs. It is, what it is. MTR isn't being "blamed" for anything. MTR does what it is suppose to do...Make burnable copy of a DVD. It does a great job at this. BUT, to use said output for encoding...well, compromises have to take place.

Another example:

I recently try to use DTOX2 to join the 4hr version of LotR (2 DVDs) so I can use HB to encode one .m4v. HB does fine till it gets to the point where DTOX2 joined the 2 DVDs...and guess what...Audio Drops. Do I blame DTOX2 for the bad encode, not really? DTOX2 did what it needed to do for a burnable image, not for encoding.

Which again proves out the Mastering of DVDs to be at the very least a common denominator.

thank you very much for the lengthy and precise post. i do appreciate your time. i have always used MTR to rip the DVDs to HD first. i am very clear on the fact that HB is not a DVD ripper, it is an encoder and i prefer it as such.

DVD2ONEX is the step i dont find to be a true fix. obviously our opinions of the word solution differ, which is ok also. in my line of professional work, when there is a problem with the software, we first provide a work-around, i consider passing the DVD through DVD2ONEX to be the work-around, until we can provide the clients with a true "bug fix", where they would no longer need to use the suggested work-around.

my current workflow with other windows based applications is working very well and there is no real need for me to switch back to HB, i am very interested in the outcome of this specific issue, i struggled with it a great deal while i was using HB and i put in alot of time and effort in trying to resolve this, so this is why i am here still posting.

Just for the sake of posting, I went through the pain of ripping Pirates of the Caribbean with MTR then tried to run Handbrake on the resulting folder and I still have no audio even though DVD Player reads the MTR rip just fine.

One thing I DID notice however is that if any DVD is estimated at taking longer than 4hrs to process I can gaurentee there won't be any audio. This is NOT a fact, it's just what I'm experiencing so far.

I'll have to look more deeply into what Cava posted, but so far my first go with MTR --> HB was a big fat zero.

I tried another DVD that was silent by using MTR first and the audio is fine. Not much of an empirical test but so far so good.

Well, I don't reallly understand how the D2OX or whatever program is supposed to help on older DVD's that aren't copy protected with the latest and greatest, but since the results of tests aren't appreciated, I guess I'll move on elsewhere.
