Unable to encode "Source Code" (movie)

Post by thompson »

Apologies if this was previously answered -- trying to search for a movie entitled "Source Code" in a forum dedicated to open source (code) software is a recipe for disaster.

Anyways, Source Code doesn't seem to play nice with handbrake. I tried this with svn4061 and the latest nightly build. Thoughts on how to proceed?

libdvdread (encode encounters substantial errors and begins to lock up):

Did you check which title to pick manually (viewtopic.php?f=6&t=15874) or did you just go with what HandBrake selected by default?

Title Specific scan, with the title determined by playing the DVD in VLC.

Full scan of the DVD was taking a long time, despite it not being one of those 99 title schemes.

edit: I should add, the DVD plays fine via VLC (1.1.11).

This is a new copy protection. With the Bluray version, you have to choose the title that represents 00876.MPLS. I can't speak for the DVD version.

How did you figure this one out?

I was successful at Handbraking this blu ray but I guess I was just lucky -- I picked a title that looked likely but since I can't actually play blu-rays on my PC I didn't have any way to see what playlist it was using.

I was successful at Handbraking this blu ray but I guess I was just lucky -- I picked a title that looked likely but since I can't actually play blu-rays on my PC I didn't have any way to see what playlist it was using.
You may want to watch to be sure....

PS.. I just got done watching it and can confirm that playlist 876 is correct.

If you use the nightly and enable logging level 2 in preferences, the playlist will show up in your log, like:

Code: Select all

bd: scanning title 1
bd: playlist 00100.MPLS
Also, titles will be arranged in playlist order, so if i > j then playlist(i) > playlist(j) etc.

Edit: looks like the latest AnyDVD will show the correct playlists somewhere in its UI.
Cavalicious wrote:This is a new copy protection. With the Bluray version, you have to choose the title that represents 00876.MPLS. I can't speak for the DVD version.
It's a novelty for Blu-ray (though it's apparently been around in one form or another for about 7 months), but multiple fake titles have been around on DVD for a while now. It's almost antiquated :P

Edit 2: it's easier to work around for DVDs though. Multiple software players with menu support and which display the current title.

Thompson: check the title in DVD Player.app just to make sure. If it's also title 31, it's another issue - you'll want to try MakeMKV or AnyDVD (not much can be done about it in HandBrake unless John decides to get his hands on the disc).

This is true..., but it's the first time I've seen it this elaborate.

Well, I can't use a nightly (they are broken -- see my bug report) but I'll check out AnyDVD and see where I might be able to see this.

However, I *did* watch Source Code (the Handbraked file) and it was fine, so I must have guessed right <g>.

Can someone confirm the correct title to choose from the Handbrake Title dropdown for the US blu-ray? Thanks!

You are aware there could be literally dozens of different "US" versions of the disc. Each with potentially different title layouts. Stick it in a player, and from that, figure out what title it's using.

Pick the title which corresponds to the correct playlist (according to the AnyDVD forums, both 00743.MPLS and 00876.MPLS should work).

Thanks for the replies, guys.

Sorry, didn't know there were different versions with different title arrangements, I don't have the nightly, I use 0.9.5, and I don't have a PC player. AnyDVD lists the playlists in its logs, but doesn't seem to link them to the titles.

I do have a standalone bluray player, I'll check to see if it will reveal the number of the title it chooses. Thanks!

Guys, it doesn't work like this!

For DVDs, you can look at the title number indicated by the player and use it in HandBrake. For Blu-rays, the "title" numbers indicated by HandBrake correspond to an internal index specific to libbbluray, not the playlist numbers (which are the Blu-ray "titles").

Forget about software/hardware Blu-ray players, and follow my instructions:

Pick the title which corresponds to the correct playlist (according to the AnyDVD forums, both 00743.MPLS and 00876.MPLS should work).
Or Cavalicious's instructions:

There is no easier way.

Sorry for the late reply, was leaving for vacation right when I posted my original question.

So I loaded up the DVD in DVD Player.app and it reported Title 2. Which is odd, because VLC reports Title 31.

Anyhow, encoding with Title 2 yields no errors. I'm not sure what crazy copy protection scheme they've employed to trick VLC, but all seems to be resolved now.

I have no idea why VLC reports a different title, but it's known to happen sometimes.

This should hopefully makes things a bit easier: https://trac.handbrake.fr/changeset/4182

Thanks for the help. I was having the same problem. It seems to be working fine using title #2.
