Can I expect a performance boost from upgrading the Graphics Card?

Post by Kyruss »

Hello,
at the moment I am using an Asus ROG Geforce GTX 1660 Ti.
My CPU (i9-7940x) is on average 50 - 55 % busy.
I'm now thinking about buying a GeForce RTX 2080 Ti, if this will give me a increase in performance.

Would a noticeable improvement be expected here?

For the software encoders, no, because they use the CPU.

You could use QSV, if you are OK with the larger files and somewhat lower quality, without changing your video card. Speed would get MUCH faster.

From what I'm reading, though, the NVenc hardware encoder isn't quite as good as the Intel QSV encoder, so upgrading your card JUST for encoding performance isn't a good deal.

I would not expect any performance increase with that jump

It may be useful to note here that hardware encoders do not use the GPU, rather a separate ASIC hardware chip. I believe the ASIC in the 1660 and 2080 models is identical.
