Since I have several Mac Computers - a friend asked me to test the HandBrake speed on each of them to see what the difference would be. I'm posting my process and results as a reference for anyone else that might be interested.

The Process
·         Updated Operating System on each computer
·         Updated HandBrake on each computer
·         Updated the HandBrake Presets on each computer
·         Stopped all 3rd Party Applications from launching on re-boot, unplugged all external devices and re-booted each computer

The Source File
·         Movie = Pacific Rim
·         File size and type = 37.47 GB .mkv
·         Created via MakeMKV from the original Blu-Ray Disc
·         Source File Location = on the respective Desktop of each computer

HandBrake Setting
·         Preset = AppleTV 3
·         Additional Subtitle Setting = Foreign Audio Search - (Bitmap) (PGS), Forced Only, Burned In
·         Output File Location = on the respective Desktop of each computer

Computer 1 - Tested on 02/24/2014
·         17” 2007 MacBook Pro (MacBookPro2,1)
·         3GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM
·         2.33 GHz 2-Core Intel Core 2 Duo
·         Running Mac OS X 10.7.5 (Lion)
Results = it took 14 Hours and 19 minutes with a final file size of 9.81GB

Computer 2 - Tested on 02/24/2014 and then again on 10/19/2014
·         15” Retina, Mid 2012 - MacBook Pro (MacBookPro10,1) - A1398
·         16GB 1600 MHz DDR3 RAM
·         2.7 GHz 4-Core Intel Core i7
·         Running Mac OS X 10.9.1 (Mavericks) for the 1st test and 10.9.5 for the 2nd test
Results #1 = it took 13 Hours and 3 minutes with a final file size of 9.83GB
Results #2 = took exactly 5 Hours with a final file size of 9.83GB
* After posting the results from Test #1, it was suggested there may be an overheating issue with the laptop. I took it in for repair and they replaced the Logic Board and Heat Sink. I then completed test #2.

Computer 3 - Tested on 09/30/2014
·         27” Late 2013 - iMac (iMac14,2) - A1419
·         16GB 1600 MHz DDR3 RAM
·         3.4 GHz 4-Core Intel Core i5
·         Running Mac OS X 10.9.5 (Mavericks)
Results = it took 2 Hours and 54 minutes with a final file size of 9.82GB

Computer 4 - Tested on 09/21/2014
·         Late 2013 - Mac Pro (MacPro6,1) - A1481
·         64GB 1867 MHz DDR3 RAM
·         3.5 GHz 6-Core Intel Xeon E5
·         Running Mac OS X 10.9.5 (Mavericks)
·         Note - Because my primary user account’s home folder has been relocated to an external drive, I ran this process through the Guest Account so the HandBrake Application and Desktop were located on the same internal hard drive
Results = it took 1 Hour and 47 minutes with a final file size of 9.88GB

All logs are saved to disk (Macintosh HD > Users > your username > Library > Application Support > HandBrake > EncodeLogs). I'd like to see the log for computer 2, as the encoding time is way too long for that hardware. Having the computer 1 log for comparison purposes might be nice too.

It's long... should I copy and paste it in a reply to this thread... or is there a better way to share it?

Nothing obvious, unfortunately. Perhaps the early days of OS X 10.9?

Maybe for the 2007 MacBook Pro... but it's disappointing that a fairly new computer (2012 Retina MacBook Pro) with good specs and running the latest OS available would perform almost as well (or poorly). I'm not sure how it works... but maybe it's the power of a desktop processor verse a laptop.

And just to confirm the results... I ran the same .mkv file through the same process on Computer 2 again (2012 Retina MacBook Pro). It actually took more time... though I did launch Preview in order to take a screenshot this time. I would post the screenshot and the log... but again, I'm new to the forum and I'm not sure how to do it when posting a reply.

But thanks for looking through my prior results and your input.

No, the rMBP should be much faster than the older dual core (I would expect the encode to take between 4 and 5 hours, at most 6). Have you tried updating it to 10.9.5?

Yeah, when I re-tested a couple of days ago and reposted above... Computer #2 (2012 Retina MacBook Pro) was running 10.9.5

Maybe I have a hardware issue... though I'm not sure how I can diagnose it (so I can get it repaired).

Not quite sure how you'd do that either, to be honest. But it is definitely slower than it should be.

I'd be checking CPU temperatures and fan speeds for a start... If your CPU is overheating, say due to a poorly fitted heatsink, then CPU throttling may be responsible for the slow encode speeds.

Speaking from personal experience, I've owned both a 2007 Macbook Pro (2.4 GHz C2D) and a 2011 Macbook Pro (2.2 GHz i7) and the latter is dramatically faster.

Thank you for the suggestion... I'll definitely check how it's running during the next task.

Rich364, first off thanks for sharing this info, its quite useful.

Secondly,
1. Could you please also post Computer 3 & 4's encode log?
2. Could you edit your original post to include the Apple model (e.g. A1234) and order (e.g. MC123/XA) numbers for exact hardware specs?

Cheers,

MC

I updated the original post with the Apple Model... but I don't know where to pull the Order number from.

The encode log for Computer 3 is below... unfortunately I can't get the log for Computer 4 because it was completed within the Guest Account and all the data gets erased when you log out (I did it within the Guest Account because I wanted to do the closest comparison as possible... and my primary user account on the Mac Pro does not reside on the internal hard drive like my other computers).

Thanks to TedJ I brought the RetinaMBP in and they found some issues. Apple replaced the Logic Board and the Heat Sink (no charge). After I got it home I ran the test above again... and found much better results (I updated the original post). Thank you again for the help!

Re: Speed Test Results from Various Mac Computers (Retina 5k iMac)

In response to Rich364's post I thought I would post what I have seen with the new iMac with the 5k Retina display.

I selected 6 different BluRay MKV files last night, ranging in size from 28 to 33 GB. All were 1080p sources and used the "Normal" setting (since I really haven't discerned a huge difference from one setting to another, but let me know if you would like to see a different setting). MKVs were read from the local SSD and M4Vs were written back to the same local SSD.

One thing to note is that I have the 4.0 GHz processor and it runs REALLY hot... The temperature from iStat Menus is always in the 93+ degrees Celsius range and occasionally core 3 reports crossing into triple digits while the fan is at max. All eight threads show pretty much maximum and activity monitor during Handbrake encoding is often as high as 790%.

I noticed a 10-ish% performance improvement in fps when I disabled a second 2k display during encoding. I did not notice a significant performance improvement when I reduced the 5K display resolution to 1080p during encoding.

Machine Type: iMac 15,1
CPU Speed: 4.0 GHz
Number of CPUs: Quad
Rip Format (MP4, AVI etc): MP4
Video Size & settings: 1080 "normal setting"
Quality / Bit Rate: "normal" setting
1 or 2 Pass: 1
Min/Max or Average Frames Per Second (FPS): 81.82, 77.31, 80.24, 83.89, and 100.34 (queue of 6 movies)

Dunno if this is helpful or not. Hopefully it is.
